Year 845, Shiganshina District
Grisha gawked at my figure, several different emotion flitting across his features. The most common one was disbelief and a little bit of sadness.
He rushed through the door and grabbed my arm, gently pulling me to the side, away from the hearing range of the others. He fell to his knees and grasped both of my shoulders with his hands.
"What are you doing here? How are you alive? Where are your parents? Why are you still so young?" He fired off so many questions at once, it made my head spin. He must have noticed for he slowed down and looked me directly in the eyes.
"Do you remember me?"
"I-I don't know. You feel familiar but I can't remember you. I can't remember anything at all." I felt the stinging feeling of tears beginning to well up in my eyes but I pushed the feeling down.
Grisha was silent for a few moments. Then, his eyes brightened. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small charm. It was a black cat with a sparkling green gem for an eye.
"This. You gave me this many years ago before you and your parents were taken away by the-" he cut himself off shortly, but waved the charm in front of my face as if he hadn't said anything.
Something clicked in my mind. "Oh! You were friends with my parents, right? I know I bought that at the market one day."
"Yes, that's correct. Do you... do you know how long ago that was?" His expression turned serious.
"Yeah, that was just a few days ago. Wait, why do you look so different?"
I remembered now. The Grisha Jaeger I knew was a young boy, nineteen if I recall correctly. He wasn't as tall as he was now, and his face was much younger looking.
"Rinjie... that was twenty years ago."
My stomach dropped. I felt cold, the shock of his statement nailing itself into my brain. Twenty years?
"W-what?" Was the only thing I could squeeze out. My body was frozen, still trying to comprehend what he had just said.
Grisha glanced at the sky, taking note of the time. He removed his hands from my shoulders and stood.
"I have to go catch a boat. But I need to tell you one thing. Anything that you remember about before you were taken away, you cannot tell anyone. Do you understand? Everything will be revealed in due time. I will be back soon. Any questions you have will need to wait until then."
And he left, leaving me still standing there in shock at his bombshell of a statement.
Why can't I talk to anyone about this? Could it be that they don't know? Just what has been happening in the world? Twenty years ago? Aren't I only eleven? How is that possible?
"Rinjie, are you alright?" Shadis' voice brought me back to reality. He had strode over to me along with Carla.
"Y-yes. I'm fine."
"How do you know my husband?" Carla questioned, nothing but curiosity in her tone.
"Um, him and my parents were friends." I said. It wasn't a lie, but I took heed what Grisha had instructed me to do. If he had been so serious about it, it must be important.
