Year 850, Utgard Castle
—We were surrounded, it was a trap.
They had played us from the beginning.—
The numerous titans converged on the castle, clawing at the stones to reach our small group at the top of the tower. Back at the wall, the Beast Titan disappeared over the edge to the other side.
I scanned the area, counting as many titans as I could see. Nanaba and Gelgar were prepared to jump back down into the fray and I stopped them.
"Squad Leader Nanaba, Gelgar," I approached the edge of the tower where they stood. "I'm going to help you kill these titans, but I need you to not freak out."
"Huh? What do you mean? What do you plan on doing? You have no gear!" Nanaba exclaimed, pointing out the obvious.
"I don't need gear."
"Wait! Rinjie, surely you don't mean-" Reiner called out from behind me but I had already taken a running start and threw myself off the edge. I heard gasps erupt from the soldiers.
I didn't have my knife with me so I pulled an Eren and bit down into my hand, drawing blood.
The all too familiar yellow light sparked from the wound on my hand and steam erupted from my body.
Muscle fibers attached to my face and built up the structure of my titan's form, starting from the feet and making its way up to the head where it encased me in the nape.
It had been awhile since I last transformed, and it was the very second time I had, so it took a moment to gather my bearings.
But that moment was short-lived because the surrounding titans immediately shifted their focus to me and began charging at me.
I targeting the larger titans, safely assuming the two soldiers would easily detain the smaller ones as they had swooped down not long after I had jumped.
I threw punches and kicks, aiming mostly for the base of their necks to permanently down them as quickly as I could.
It was far to easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of large titans that had gathered, so I tried to act quickly and efficiently.
It was slow-going, but the process was eventually proving useful. Mostly smaller titans and a few larger ones remained.
However, I could tell my energy was draining fast, I hadn't had any practice using my titan like Eren had, and it was taking a toll on me.
For a second, I was distracted by the screams from Gelgar and Nanaba. The titans around the base of the tower had gotten ahold of them and were tearing them apart.
No...no! This is what I was trying to prevent! I was too focused on what I was doing I didn't check on them! I shouldn't have assumed they'd be fine with that many titans!
Dammit!
The sky was beginning to lighten, we had spent all night searching the wall and fighting off the titans at the castle. The past several hours felt like just a matter of minutes.
