Tommy POV
Tommy looked up, studying his unfamiliar surroundings. Where was he? He was standing in a field, one he had never seen before. He turned around slowly, hoping for some kind of hint of how he had gotten there.
"Spark? What are you doing here?" a voice called out.
Tommy's eyes widened at the sight of his father. He froze, blinking several times to make sure he was seeing correctly. Before he could even think, he raced to his father, holding his arms out to embrace him. He squeezed his eyes shut, wanting to enjoy the safety the embrace supplied.
However it wasn't safe... it was scratchy? He opened his eyes, realizing he was hugging a tree. He backed up a few steps, glancing around for his father.
Again the voice cried out, "Tommy?"
Tommy searched for the source, finding his father standing a few feet away from him. He was about to run again when he spoke again, "Spark, you can't touch me. No matter how hard you try."
Tommy sighed, holding back tears. "I-I miss you."
Ryder smiled sadly, "I know. But you have Ivory, that should be enough."
"Wh-what?"
Ivory appeared beside him, smiling. "Listen to your father Thomas."
Tommy's breaths became more rapid as he began to shake. Suddenly he couldn't move. He couldn't even close his eyes no matter how hard he tried. What was happening to him?
"Father?" he whispered, his breaths coming out rapid and raspy.
Ryder's once gentle eyes were now cold, filled with hatred that Tommy had only seen in Ivory's eyes. "You deserve everything that has happened to you. Ivory has given you more mercy than you should have ever been given. You are a disgrace to this world, and a horrible son."
"I-I but- I didn't do anything!" he sobbed as the words rang out. What had he done to deserve the hatred he was given? "I-I'm your son!"
Ryder paused, looking him straight in the eye. "I wouldn't even call you that."
Tommy woke up with a gasp, sweat pouring down his forehead. His fingers grasped his pillow, sobbing into it with no control. How could his father say that? He trembled, curling up as small as he could. He had never wanted to disappear so badly.
He didn't even hear his door open and close before arms were wrapping around him. Someone was speaking, but he couldn't understand a word they were saying. He didn't even know who it was.
And suddenly he heard a heartbeat, steadily beating. He closed his eyes, focusing everything he could onto that calming pulse.
Slowly he began to calm done, coming back to reality. A few moments passed and he finally calmed himself down enough for him to regain control of his breathing. Fingers began to gently run through his hair, soothing him further.
"Toms?"
Tommy finally opened his eyes, shocked to find Wilbur holding him. After all Wilbur was the one who had wanted him gone in the first place. "Wilbur?"
"I'm here Tommy, don't you worry. I got you." he whispered, pulling the blonde closer. Tommy melted into his grip, feeling the safety he had longed for. Wilbur sighed, "That was quite the nightmare."
The boy nodded, embarrassed to have woken the older man up. "S-sorry-"
"Don't be." the man smiled warmly. "Just know that it wasn't real."
Tommy felt tears prick his eyelids and before he knew it, he was sobbing into Wilbur's sweater. Everything that happened in the dream came rushing back to him. Every single word.
Wilbur held him, rubbing his back.
"I-I can't stop hearing it Wilbur, it's so loud!" the blonde cried, his father's words ringing through his brain. He couldn't think of anything else.
He felt himself being lifted and carried out of the room. Tommy's grip tightened on the brunette, and Wilbur's tightened as well. Suddenly he was laying on something soft. Blankets were wrapped around him and he couldn't help but melt into them.
A soft sound echoed through the room, something Tommy had never heard before. He slowly looked up to see Wilbur, a guitar in his hands.
Wilbur began to strum the instrument, before beginning to sing.
"Come stop your crying
It will be alright
Just take my hand
Hold it tight
I will protect you
From all around you
I will be here
Don't you cry."
Tommy felt himself relax, leaning into Wilbur slightly. Much to his surprise, Wilbur didn't push him away or move, he actually leaned back.
"For one so small
You seem so strong
My arms will hold you
Keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
Can't be broken
I will be here don't you cry."
Tommy closed his eyes, listening to his words. Did he actually mean them? Would Wilbur actually be there for him no matter what? Or was it too good to be true?
"'Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more."
It probably was. After all he was nothing more than trouble. Everywhere he went he seemed to make people miserable. Who's not to say he would do the same to Wilbur? He didn't want to make people miserable. He didn't want people to feel unsafe around him. He just wanted to be safe. Was that too much to ask for?
"You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be in my heart
Always
Always."
Wilbur strummed the guitar one final time, allowing the music to ring around the room. He looked down at Tommy, full of love. A love that only one other person had ever shown Tommy. His father.
Before he could think, he was again wrapped in warm arms. "I'll always be here for you Tommy, no matter what."
Tommy bit his lip, "But I've only caused trouble-"
"You don't Tommy." Wilbur shook his head firmly. "You've been told lies all your life."
Tommy sighed, wanting to move away from the subject. He had cried enough for one night. "D-do you think you could teach me guitar some time?"
Wilbur smiled, "I would love to."
Maybe, just maybe, this was a step towards healing.
