Part One
~
"Today your training is focusing on something different." Tsukiko said as the two walked through the village, Keiko hiding in her cloak whilst the blue haired woman wore the same white sundress. She wore sandals this time, which the younger girl was thankful for, because it would've drawn attention to them if a woman was walking around barefoot. Though, everyone's eyes still seemed to be on the woman. She was beautiful after all - long light blue hair, a gentle face, clear skin, not to mention she actually had way more on her chest, unlike Keiko. She waved to some villagers who walked past her, some of them waving back and others ignoring her. It was like she was a princess.
"You don't have to be so nice to everyone here, you know?" Keiko said, looking to her sensei. "Some of the people here are creeps."
Tsukiko continued to wave at the villagers, "You should try waving to them too, it's a sign of kindness."
"Hn." she closed an eye, looking forward. "Shouldn't we be keeping a low profile? You were literally the Second Hokage's wife. Someone's bound to recognize you."
"There's no need to overthink it Keiko dear," she looked at her student and smiled softly at her. "We'll be fine."
"Whatever you say.."
She pulled her cloak hood further down her face, a huff escaping her.
"Now, as I was saying," the older woman continued to speak, no longer waving at the villagers. "Your training today will focus on something different. Both you and your brother are in the phase of being — emo. There's no need to worry, it happens with most kids your age. However, today we will try to get you more adjusted to the lifestyle outside of being...edgy."
Keiko looked up at the other as if she were crazy. "I am not emo. Give me two reasons how I am."
"Oh. Well— For starters, you wear black, everything. Even in the summer. It's a bit concerning."
She sneered.
"Two — you act angsty and cold towards your friends. I'm sure your friend— What was his name? Kanki? Kankuro? Ah yes, Kankuro. I'm sure it bothers him a bit."
She scoffed.
"And three-" Tsukiko turned to her student and smiled. "It's just in your blood."
"Hn."
Well shit.
"Circling back to today's lesson—" The woman stopped walking and turned to Keiko, "We're going to have you meet some new friends!"
"That's a terrible idea." she replied almost immediately, "I'm not here to make friends, Sensei."
"Emo." she smiled, and the other glared at her teacher. "Now, how about you start looking around for people to befriend? Hmm.."
She looked around, finger on her chin, "Aha. What about that young gentlemen over there?"
Keiko looked over to where she was pointing, met with a familiar face. It was that boy from the chunin exams. What was his name? Shikinaru? Shikmaru?? She didn't remember. The only things she remembered about him was he used shadows and had a pineapple-like haircut. He seemed pretty chill.
"Why him? Can't we find someone else? Like.. Temari?"
"Your job is to make new friends, today. You can reconnect with your old friends tomorrow." she then pushed her student toward the pineapple-haired boy, making her groan.
She began to walk towards him, no idea what she was going to say. She absentmindedly tapped on his shoulder, cloak still casting a shadow over the entirety of her face. The boy turned around, eyebrow raised. He looked a bit confused - but not alarmed.
"Hello there. I don't think you remember me- but I was there at the chunin exams. I believe your name is Shikamaru, correct?" she smiled, it looked a bit forced, but it was there. "I'm Keiko. Keiko Rotasu."
"Oh yeah. I know you." he rubbed the back of his neck, he looked tired. "You're that cloaked one that revealed themselves at the pre-round thing."
She smiled, slightly irked, Tsukiko's charka presence disappearing.
"Yes. That's me."
Is that really what people know me as? Cloaked one?
Maybe I should stop wearing cloaks.
"It's nice to meet you." she said - holding her hand out for him to shake.
He shook her hand, and after they both let go he yawned. "What brings you here?"
Fuck. She hadn't thought of that one.
"Oh-" she chuckled nervously, although it seemed normal. "I just saw you while I was passing by to get-"
Keiko looked up at the sign,
"-Ingredients. For my salad. I'm having a family dinner today with my brother."
"So you've got family back here at Konoha. Interesting."
Nodding, she examined the vegetable stand. There was actually a few things she wanted to buy - but she decided to finish the conversation.
"A few years ago we erm- separated."
That was a nice way to put it.
He thought she was being a bit weird, but shrugged it off, and turned back to the vegetable. "Not to be troublesome - but what kind of salad are you making?"
Keiko looked towards the vegetables again. "Something not too big. I'm going for something with.."
She looked around, and spotted her favorite veggie. "Cucumbers."
"Cucumber salad. Nice choice." he looked at the carrots, and it was her turn to ask him.
"What about you? Are you picking up groceries?" she tilted her head to the side.
"Huh? Oh. Yeah." he picked up a carrot and looked it up and down, before putting it back and grabbing another one. "My mom's cooking dinner tonight but we were low on some ingredients. If I'm being honest with you - I'm not the biggest fan of vegetable stew."

| This was a terrible chapter I'm so sorry 😭
t was a bit short, but I wanted to make it into two chapters so it took a while to edit. I'll publish the other part soon (not in two months I promise)I specifically chose Shikamaru as the character for this chapter because he's one of the characters I kin and one of my favorites. I also think he'd be compatible with our fellow emo Keiko. Him and Keiko's relationship won't have any romance - but I do want to make them close friends.
Only a bit more chapters to go and then I can finally get a new arc in 😩
Once it gets to Shippuden I have all the angst and drama planned out ;)
P.S. can we normalize Keiko being a bipolar little crap 🙄✋
