PICKING FIGHTS
===================================
Disarray broke out amongst the once strong group of newsies. Papes and punches where being swung left right and centre, the predators aiming there tight fists at anyone's faces who dare stand up to them. Claras head whipped around in several directions before she spotted a slim alley way just to the left of the paper stand, without thinking her legs carried her away-Quickening with every long stride she made. It was close now, safety was in the other side. Justice was on the other side. Her progress came to a pause abruptly as a firm clasp wrapped around one of her wrists as she was yanked of her balance to the peril of the cold cobbles below- her bones rattling as she came into contact with the hard ground. tears threatened to spill at the immense pain but she wouldn't let them. She found herself wrapping her arms around the calf of her peruser gripping on tight before twisting round and performing an old movement called the corkscrew- it took years for some to master yet in the most daring of situations defeated ones opponent within seconds. She heard a thud next to her and quickly scrambled up glancing at the bruise that had now formed round her wrist at the tight contact. Rubbing away the pain she glanced down at her now prey. The dirty face of Oscar delancy glared back at her. cowering in her presence.
" you consider women as fragile but I've never seen something so easily wounded as your ego mr delancy"
And with that she walked away.
shouts still echoed across the street as Clara ducked and swerved hurriedly around the overthrown newsies square. Yells ricocheted off walls into her face, pain spread like a virus amongst the boys as the once proud warriors fled away down the pathways from the clear victor of the battle. Pulitzer was winning. The once happy world was crumbling in claras hands and there was nothing that anyone could do about it.
New York- the city of dreams.
New York- the city of nightmares.
A barrel rolled across the ground in front of her as the loud cries of les tumbled within, looking in which the direction it came from Clara noticed an overwhelmed Davy searching for rescue- he was a sinking ship and Clara would be his lifeboat . Quickly she fled toward the boy pushing anyone out the way who happened to be in her path. When she got there she threw her arms around him in a tight hug before yanking him out the way and behind one of the newsie stalls. Shaking she just blankly stared at her cousin unaware of what to do, they were both lost and out of there depth in a dark ocean of war
"Are you alright?" she questioned hurriedly "what happened to les?"
"I-I don't know" he gulped "me and Jack put him in there to keep 'im safe then before I knew it he was rolled across that square"
Clara looked at him a bewildered expression painted across her red face. She found her hand pressed against her forehead in a moment of weakness, those tears on the brink of falling once again. she let out a puff of air before returning her attention on the battle that lay ahead.
"Look Clara- I'm sure Jack is keepin Les safe"
"Oh my god Jack"
Clara slid past her cousin who's battered hands tried to hold her back yet she managed to clasp herself free of the protective grip. Her heart was pounding faster and faster as she searched the crowd for her jack. Who knew that one article concocted from nothing but love could be the ruin of so many things. the square was less crowded now as many of the newsies had fled back to the lodge or hidden away from pure fear.
"Jack!" She shouted at the top her lungs trying to have her voice heard over the angry cries of the cruel middle aged men. "Jack" she shouted again and again But no response came except for the whistle of the cops.
They would be rescued or so they thought
The brawl continued as the men in uniform turned there back on the people of there city. Bats out with no mercy. With all attention on the new bad guys the climax of this story was coming and Clara knew that this was her time to flee.
That was until she saw him. There he was amongst the crowd a face of determination splattered across his sharp features. "Jack!" She yelled once more hoping he would hear, praying that he would see her.
And he did- how could he not?Jack used all his might to make his way over to the girl. The girl he cared so much for yet he wasn't sure why. Ignoring the kicks and punches launched at him he ran over to the one person he needed to keep safe. Wrapping his arms around her in a tight embrace his eyes scanned across her now fragile body for any trace of injury. Clara could feel his heart thumping in his chest with every exhale he made. The young pair found peace within one another.
"This way quick" he stated before latching his hand firmly onto hers and taking them to safety. Clambering up the metal stairs one by one Clara could feel her body get weaker, she was drained, she was tired however she would not give up on these boys.
A loud thud could be heard from down below as crutchie was thrown down onto the floor in a violent and extreme manner his crutch ripped out his hands. Clara faced Jack to her right to see an emotion across his face that not even the most intellectual student could read. For Jack Kelly was scared. As scared as angel falling from heaven into the firey pits of hell below.
"Jack help" crutchie screamed tears streaking down his face. "Ja-" he was cut off with a sharp jab to the rib cage as the delancy brothers soaked him again and again and again. Jack screamed for the boy as he was dragged across the floor into the oblivion.
The screams were the instruments, conducting a symphony of terror amongst those who witnessed the tragic event. The instruments grew and grew into a large climax creating a sinful tune in the air. The drums where pounding and the violins screeching as the pain came to a close. The conductor had taken his bow and the newsies had lost.
A strong arm found its way around Claras torso as she span around and was hugged tightly into jacks warm embrace. His tears were staining her dress but she did not care. Jacks loud shouts echoed across the city and could've been heard by even the oldest of people. She ran her fingers through his hair gently pulling him in even closer to show she would be here for him no matter the cost.
"hey, he's going to be okay, your okay" she whispered gently into his ear trying to comfort the now broken boy. The tears that once retreated back into her eyes emerged again and started to trickle down the girls face as the rain poured down from the sky above. It trickled its way down the tall buildings, falling down like the world around them.
"We are going to get him back"
