Chapter One

I sat on my bed and waited for my mom to start yelling. It would come soon. Infact she was about five minutes late, as I looked at my wristwatch. I hated going down to breakfast. I deliberately stayed in my room until it was time to go to school and then went flying down the stairs. Sitting with my mom, step dad and step brother around the breakfast table was the pits, with their false smiles and façade of a happy family. My step dad always read the morning newspaper at the table. Mom was always on her phone and my annoying step brother always threw his coco pops at me, because he knew I won't rat on him. To kill the time I texted my best friend April, and off course April's juicy report on her date with Matt last night had me so entranced, I did not even hear mom's shout.

'Katy!' Andy banged on my door repeatedly, 'we have to go.'

'I'm coming,' I yanked my door open, shoved my cell into my pocket and did my usual sprint down the stairs.

'What on earth do you do for so long?' Mom whined, 'you are never on time for breakfast.'

'Sorry,' I mumbled, grabbed my sandwich bag, helped myself to a banana and an apple, kissed mom on her cheek, and rushed for the door.

'Aren't you forgetting your manners young lady?' mom whined again.

'Bye Roger, have a nice day,' I waved to my stepdad, when I saw mom's tell tales signs of irritation, her slender well manicured fingers placed on her hips.

'Morning Barney,' I mumbled to our chauffeur and slid into the back seat.

'Good morning Barney. Pleasant day today I say,' Andy cooed in his studious voice.

'Morning Ms Katy, Morning Master Andy,' the chauffeur greeted us, in his stoic monotone, and proceeded to slide into the driver's seat after shutting the doors.

I wish I could have walked to school, but mom would not hear of it. School was about a good fifteen minute walk, if I walked quite briskly, but no the illustrious Murray reputation was at stake, and so every day I was compelled to suffer the humiliation of being driven in one of my stepdad's limos to school. Off course Andy reveled in it, and anything less was beneath his dignity, after all he was born with the proverbial 'silver spoon in his mouth.'

'So have you found a boy friend?' Andy needled, when he saw a smirk on my face, as I was responding to April's text.

'Shut up Andy, and mind your own business.'

'What's the slime ball's name?' Andy taunted irritatingly.

I plugged my iPod's earphones on and ignored Andy until the limo stopped outside the school gate.

'Barney could you stop away from the school? You know I hate being driven right to the gate,' I hissed, as I felt the other students stare and glare at us alighting.

'I will be waiting at fourteen hundred hours for you two,' Barney responded, ignoring my question.

I lowered my head and hurried into the hall, hoping Raphael was not here yet. Ah Raphael the love of my life. Not that he knew I exist. Even if I walked past his locker five times, he never gave me a first glance, let alone a second. Many of the students were in awe of Raphael.  He always wore that angry scowl on his face, and those brooding eyes of his could be intimidating, but I found him so attractive. He is in the senior class. Plays defense for the school soccer team. He's tall with big shoulders, and has the sexiest backside. The guys did not like Rafe because he never has to work too hard to get any girl, though he never dates anybody from our school, but he's always with some pretty girl when we catch sight of him at the Hunter Burger Ranch on some Friday evenings. I wish he would just smile at me, just once, so I would know that he knew I exist. Perhaps he thinks at sixteen I'm too young for him. I know he's nineteen, because I peeked into his student file, the one afternoon I helped the principal's PA with some filing, and his birthday is in three months time, on the twenty first of September. I wonder if I should secretly send him__.
