'You and Jamie, it must be a record?''We are not __. It's none of your business now is it?' I threw at him in the end.
'But surely a spoilt rich girl like you, with a low threshold for boredom, changes boyfriends, like one changes underwear?' he accused.
'How dare you judge me, when you don't know a thing about me?' I hissed.
'Oh I know everything about you?' he sneered.
'W__what do you mean?' I panicked.
Did he know about my feelings for him? Does he know about the photo shots I've been taking of him?
'Australia, Spain, America, what does it matter, you're all the same!' he scoffed
'Maybe I have no right to say this Rafe, but don't paint me with the same brush as your mother__.' I stopped speaking as the siren buzzed, announcing the interval was over.
'You're right,' his fingers pierced into my wrist, 'don't ever speak about my mother, she does not exist, as far as I'm concerned,' he spat out.
I gasped, when I heard his cold, icy voice spoken with such harshness. It hurt more than his vicegrip around my wrist. We should be getting back inside, but I was mesmerized by his presence,.
'W__what about Cade? She may want to see your mother sometime.''She doesn't' he denied, 'my mother made her bed, Cadelaria does not need her.'
'You can't be so cruel, you can't do that to Cade__'
'You care about Cadelaria, don't you querida?' his fingers reached out and ran across my cheek.
Startled, I jumped back, as if his fingers burnt my face, "Querida?" Cade had been teaching me Spanish. I know that was an endearment, meaning "beloved, or darling."
'We need to go back in,' I blurted, seeing everybody had gone in, and we were the last ones still outside.
'No yet querida,' he murmured leaning forward, and before I knew what was happening, his lips touched my softly.
I was gob smacked, I had waited like a whole twelve months for this moment, and when it happened, my bottle of mineral water fell to the floor, and I scurried away from him, like a frightened mouse escaping the vicious claws of a cat.
'Didn't you get your water?' Jamie whispered, so as not to disturb anybody else.
I shook my head, 'the sired sounded,' I lied.
Jamie slipped his arm around my neck, 'come on have some of my coke, I insist,' he practically fed his cup to my lips.
I had a raging thirst from sprinting away from Rafe, and appreciated his iced drink.
Rafe had kissed me, OMG, I can't believe it. And I stupidly ran away from him. I can't wait to tell you Dear Diary__.
I was disturbed by a heavy hand on my shoulder, a warm familiar hand. I slowly turned around.
'I picked up some water for you,' that taunting voice spoke. I could not see his eyes, but I'm sure they were dancing with mischief, and he wasn't lying about "picking it up."
'T__thank you,' I mumbled, grateful, that the darkness hid my blushing face.
'Thanks Rafe,' Jamie smacked a high five with him.
For the next two weeks I stayed away from the soccer field. Jamie was not pleased about my lack of moral support at his games. I made excuses about helping Andy with his school projects and assisting my step dad with some unspecified chores. And off course I also stayed away from my Spanish lessons. Previously I used to meet Cade at their home for one hour Spanish lessons, on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, but only after I knew Rafe had already left for his work. I had often taken some cookies or whatever Cook had baked for Cade. I'd also take extra portions so that there was enough to share with Rafe as well. Cade was becoming suspicious, especially since she knew nothing about Andy's class projects that I was inventing. I should not let Rafe get to me this way. For heaven's sake it was just a simple brush of a kiss. And off course it meant nothing to him, on the odd occasion we had passed each other in the corridor or the cafeteria, Rafe true to form, had not even acknowledged my presence, so what was all the paranoia about? It was because his kiss had done something to me. As much as it had ended so quickly, I had felt the power of it. Had he not drawn away, I would have stupidly clung to him, and made my desire for him fairly obvious. Now I was also running out of excuses, not to go to places I knew Rafe would be at. Jamie was also demanding I accompany him to the end of season party the school soccer team was staging in two days time. I cannot believe how I was letting one stupid slip of a kiss affect me. Perhaps if I knew Rafe cared in some way, I would feel better, but he'd merely just kissed me to show me he was immune to me as a female, and that I obviously meant nothing, absolutely nothing to him.
