CHAPTER NINETEEN

'So tell me about the USA,' April plonked herself on my bed.

'Oh it was wonderful,' I smiled. 'Indianapolis is such a beautiful city. 'We went out almost every night, Jeff, myself, Tom and Ally. And my mom and Roger were so cool, they just allowed us to chill out.'

'That's awesome. Katy I am so, so proud of you for winning.'

'Thank you,' I hugged April.'I still can't believe it myself. I mean I can't believe I'm doing this sport.' I laughed.

'You have a natural amazing talent for it,' April grinned. 'Wow world champion, I just can't believe it,' she laughed, holding up the trophy.

I have quite an impressive collection of them now, Roger has promised to make me a fancy cabinet to hold them all.

'Com on photo shot!' April pulled me onto the bed and snapped us with her cell phone, lying on the bed giggling, with the trophy between us.

'Oh I have something for you,' I rushed to my suitcase.

'What is it?' April clapped her hands like a little kid anticipating a candy treat.

''Open it,' I smiled handing the gift wrapped box to her.

'Oh it so tiny, I don't want to damage the box,' she cooed.

I waited patiently as April removed the wrapping and lifted the lid of the box.

'OMG Katy! What a fancy iPod. I don't know what to say.'

It was beautiful. It had the State of Indiana Coat of Arms on it. It came with mega memory that April would never use completely. And knowing her every taste in music, I got Andy to painfully download all her favourite albums from iTunes whilst we were on the plane. He moaned and groaned at how long it was going to take, but I won't let April know how I'm indebted to my conniving brother.

'Thank you,' she whispered, with tears in her eyes.

'It was a pleasure,' I smiled, hugging April. 'So how was things here?' I asked conversationally.

'Oh, quiet without you,' she wrinkled her nose. 'Channing and I are still cool. I'm very happy,' she laughed.

'And everybody else?' I prompted, which was lost on April, for she did not offer any information on the one person I was hoping she would mention, so I just did not bother to bring his name up.

After joining us for a light lunch, April left towards the early afternoon.

'Want to talk about it?'

I looked up from gazing into space to see mom, her shoulder leaning against the doorway, her arms folded across her chest.

Dear God, when you made mothers so intuitive, did you consider the impact of it on us kids?

'Talk about what?' I avoided looking at mom as I quickly shut the webpage I was browsing.

'Katy, after April left, you hung out in your room all afternoon yesterday. At dinner you merely toyed with the meal. You've been in your room again all day today, and you've skipped lunch,' mom spoke softly.

'I'm just chilling mom, nothing's wrong,' I lied.

Mom continued to look intently at me, but her eyes were warm, gentle as she tried to draw me out of the emotional shell I was hiding inside. She took my hands in hers, but I still refused to look her in the eye.

'May I?' To prove her point, mom reached over me to my laptop, clicked on the internet explorer icon, then clicked on the last site I had visited.

'That's invading my privacy,' I weakly whispered, feeling embarrassed as Rafe's FaceBook account came on the screen
