‘Honey are you and Jeff going out?’ mom was removing lasagna from the oven‘W-what?’ I faltered.
‘You’re all dressed up, and this is the third time you’ve checked your watch,’ she spoke with half her attention on our dinner.
I was about to voice a denial, when Barney who sometimes doubles as our Butler, announced we had visitors.
‘I’ll get it mom,’ I threw down the grater, wiped of the carrot bits from my fingers and ran to the door.
‘Hi,’ I greeted Rafe with baited breath.
He stared into my eyes, not greeting me back, I was so happy to see him, I so wanted to throw my arms around his neck, and kiss him for like forever.
‘Hola,’ Cade greeted from behind Rafe, and it took me a few seconds to realize that Rafe and I were gazing at each other, and poor Cade was standing there waiting to be acknowledged.
Ah yes Cade, and I also immediately recalled why she and Rafe stood at the door. Not because Rafe had come to wish me bon voyage, but because Cade needed me to mediate on her behalf.
‘You want to come in?’ I asked breathlessly, admiring how gorgeous he looked in his figure hugging jeans.
‘Cadelaria wanted to wish you before you left on your trip,’ Rafe responded.
‘Should I leave you standing here outside, and take Cade in?’ I asked irritatedly. I mean he did not have to spell it out, that it was Cade’s doing that they were standing there.
‘We’re both coming in,’ Cade grinned, ‘pushing her brother forward, the way one does a trolley.
‘Who’s there honey?’
Mom’s eyes locked with mine, and the message her eyes related was loud and clear, as if she was saying, “okay, that answers why you’re all dressed up, and why you were eyeing your wristwatch!”
But I mean, I’m not all dressed up, I just have my favourite skin tight jeans on, and a T. But mom’s unspoken argument was that I generally slip into my PJ’s after I shower. I could feel my cheeks blushing, as my eyes pleaded with mom not to say a word.
‘Rafe, Cade, hi,’ mom smiled.
Thank you mom.
‘Hi, Mrs. Murray.’
‘Good evening Mrs. Murray.’
They both greeted, Rafe in the latter formal tone.
‘You guys are just in time, I’m about to serve Cook’s famous lasagna,’ Mom offered.
‘Thank you, we’ve just had take out,’ Rafe replied.
‘I had a cheese burger,’ Cade tucked her arm into mine, licking her lower lip.
‘What was the occasion?’ I grinned, casting my eyes Rafe’s way.
‘I was begging Rafe to get here, he was insisting he needed to cook our dinner first, so seeing that would take like two hours, I twisted his arm to get take out.’
‘So you all packed Katy?’ Cade questioned.
‘No,’ I laughed, ‘and my room’s in a mess with stuff lying everywhere.’
‘So did you print those brochures I ask you to?’ Cade asked
‘What brochures__?’
I did not get to complete my question, as I felt Cade’s elbow nudge into my side.
