The following day I received an invitation from Jeff, to go watch them cart racing at the local race track. I'd never previously watched anything like that, but it seemed like it would be more fun actually racing than watching. With a bee in my bonnet, I accepted the invitation. Tom picked me up with his car outside school. We were then going to meet up with Jeff who was getting the gocart ready. I'd called mom to let her know, I'd get a lift home with Jeff after the race.'So sweetness, you excited about our first date?' Tom smirked, with the signature cigarette clenched between his teeth.
'Date? I don't think so,' I retorted, wrinkling my nose in disgust.
'Didn't Jeff tell you, he's got other plans, it's just you and me babe,' he leaned over, in an attempt to kiss me, his slobbery wet lips looked disgusting.
I reached for the door handle, whilst the car was still in motion turning into the next street.
'What do you think you're doing?' Tom yelled.
'I'm getting out you pervert, I ain't going anywhere with you.'
Tom leaned over, slammed the door and locked it, 'Just calm down sweetness. Do you want Jeff to break my bones?'
I calmed down a little, I was not too comfortable with Tom, he could be quite creepy, when Jeff was not around.
We drove in silence for the rest of the trip, and about twenty minutes later, I glimpsed Jeff waving fervently, when he spotted Tom's clapped out buggy.
Jeff was opening my door, before Tom could switch off the ignition, he was in cover alls and smelt of grease.
'What took so long?' he whined, 'I hope Tom behaved himself,' he cast a cursory glance Tom's way.
I looked across at Tom, he pretended to wipe an invisible spot of dirt from his immaculate dashboard.
'Tom was no trouble,' I replied more boldly than I had actually felt alone in Tom's presence. He looked at me surprised that I did not rat on him. There was some new found respect in his eyes, when he gazed at me.
'Come let me take you for a spin before the races start,' Jeff dragged me by the arm.
'Wait you did not say anything about me riding,' I laughed.
'It's pretty safe,' Jeff grinned, slapping a helmet over my head.
It was an awkward looking two seater vehicle, it had a whole lot of miniature clock like devices on the dashboard. It was pretty noisy, once Jeff switched on the ignition. He leaned over, jerked on my safety belt, ensuring it was safe, and gave me the thumbs up. I nodded and looked out my window at Tom, who had a stop watch in his hand and was preparing to give Jeff the 'go' signal.
Jeff flicked a switch on my helmet, and I heard his voice in my ear.
'I'm not going to go very fast, but this is a practice run, just to test the mechanics,' he grinned.
'I raised my thumb in acknowledgement, it felt to rowdy to verbally respond.
Tom waved the 'start' flag, Jeff revved on the accelerator, and at Tom's signal Jeff spun off.
I caught my breath and clutched onto my seat for dear life. Jeff's "not fast" was pretty fast. There was no windscreen, so the wind pounded viciously against my body, even with the helmet, my eyes filled with tears. I did not have any type of glasses as protection against the fierce blowing wind. I tried to breathe normally, but every turn Jeff took, had me holding my breath in anticipation. When we cleared a very sharp bend and were on a straight path again, Jeff tapped me on my leg, sticking his thumb up, enquiring if I was okay. I forced a smile, and nodded, and returned the thumbs up. As Jeff drove on for another ten minutes or so, I started to relax, becoming accustomed to his driving through every sharp turn the gocart took, and started to eagerly anticipate the quick accents and descents the cart made over the obstacles. When Jeff stopped the cart, the only comment I could make was "exhilarating." And what do you know, I'd just become indoctrinated into the art of gocart racing. The novice that had cautiously jumped into the cart, was now a budding enthusiast.
