'Good morning sleepy head.'I dragged my head towards where the sound came from, commanding my eyes to open, but they would not. With great difficulty I dragged out a greeting in my still dazed, sleepy state.
I heard that soft grin and my eyes flew open. I looked across at Cade's bright eyes, and face grinning at me.
Rafe! Rafe slept in our home last night.
'What time is it?' I mumbled sleepily
'Twenty five past nine,' she laughed.
'What? Twenty five __' I jumped up, and checked my bedside clock. Almost nine thirty. Wow, I don't normally sleep this late on a Saturday. I'm normally up at the crack of dawn, wanting to paint the town red with April, or my other buddies.'
'Why didn't you wake me?' I asked.
'I didn't want to disturb your beauty sleep,' she grinned.
'Aren't you hungry?'
'Rafe and I had orange juice and toast before he left.'
He left? Without saying good bye!
'Left? Where's he gone to?' I asked in alarm.
'He works on a Saturday morning remember?'
'Oh yeah, that's right,' I mumbled dejectedly. 'You're up quite early.'
'I'm used to being up early.'
So Rafe's gone?
'How about you and I go to the mall?' I offered.
'The mall? Wow, can we? I never get the opportunity to do that,' she spoke dreamily.
'Yeah, just you and I,' I smiled, as I reached for my mobile and texted Barney to prepare for his morning of torture to the mall.
'I think I have a pair of jeans that will look good on you,' I smiled, 'shall I have first use of the shower?'
'I could use another shower, so we don't waste a single second,' she exclaimed excitedly.
'Will you allow me a few seconds for breakfast?' I laughed.
'Just a few,' she waged a finger in the air with mock seriousness.
Getting his number from Cade, finally, I texted Rafe to inform him that I was taking Cade shopping to the mall, to get her a birthday present. I did not want him freaking out if he returned and we were not home. I also wanted to prepare him in advance, when he saw Cade returning with shopping bags. I did not want his male pride offended, because I was throwing charity to Cade. She was all excited, in a hurry to get to the mall. I had to forgo a leisurely breakfast that I normally indulged in on a Saturday morning. Before I could get to the breakfast table, Cade had already prepared my toast and orange juice, that was all I was offered. Gone was my anticipated feast of fresh fruit, muesli, yoghurt, bacon and eggs. Cade was finished in record time, her fingers drumming on the table as I painstakingly swallowed the hard over buttered toast.
'Ready?' I grinned, pushing the plate of unfinished toast aside.
'You had enough?' she questioned, the look on her face hoping I answered in the affirmative.
'Yes, thank you. We can have a lovely lunch at the mall.'
'Good, let's go,' she practically dragged me out the house.
The animated delight on Cade's face as we traipsed from one boutique to the next was just classical. She tried on numerous pairs of fashionable jeans, cardigans and scarves. She had an amazing eye for trendy evening wear, adorning one cocktail dress after another, and modeling them for me between fits of giggles. I thought she looked absolutely stunning in particular in the one neutral hued figure hugging dress. Without her knowledge, I nodded to the sales lady to pack the neutral hued dress and a pair of slim fit jeans that I thought looked well on her diminutive, but attractive frame.
