Floras POV:
It was still pitch black outside, as i got ready to leave. It wouldn't be hard because the woman who was supposed to be looking after us (whose name I didn't even know) never locked any doors, I could just walk out and never return. Somehow I felt guilty for the girls I'd be leaving behind in this mess but I needed to do this, for myself. I don't know why I hadn't thought of it before because now it had been two years, what if Maya had forgotten me? Eventually I stopped overthinking and made my way outside, it was as easy as I thought it would be. I turned and took one last look at the place which I'd called my 'home' and walked away into the darkness. It was cold and lonely already but nothing worse than what I was used to, I didn't have much with me merely a bag containing one set of clothes, my teddy and a picture of me and my parents. That was all I owned. I felt like I'd been walking for hours and surely I hadn't got lost I knew the way to the station well I mean this is where I lived, I thought I knew the area but this didn't look familiar. That was when I heard voices and loud footsteps behind me and I stopped dead in my path, not knowing wether to look or keep going. I immediately thought the worst but surely I was just being dramatic. Soon enough I didn't have to make that decision myself as two large men wearing all black and grasping knives came storming towards me and I froze like the idiot i am.
"Empty your bag and your pockets!" , one screamed at me.
"I have nothing you'd want.", I cried back.
That was a mistake, as one lunged towards me sending the knife sharply down my left cheek, that was going to leave a hell of a scar.
"Empty them, or do you want more bitch?", the other yelled.
Blood dripping down my face and feeling myself get unsteady, I emptied out everything I had in an attempt to not cause myself any more pain. It was nothing but it was all I had and they looked at me in disgust.
"Brilliant, nice picture of mummy and daddy but that's not what I fucking wanted!" one of the guys roared as he tore the picture in half. That hurt more than the knife. That picture was all I had left of my parents, as more time goes on the memories of them had started to fade but looking at my picture always brought them back it brought a sense of comfort and they just threw that all away in seconds.
"They died in a fire!!", I screamed with everything left in me.
What a bad idea that was, they were angry, really angry. At this point I feel more terrified than I have ever felt before, my head was spinning and my vision started to go. All I could see was the black of the men's clothes in front of me and then orange flames lit in front of my face, I could smell the burning it wasn't a smell I'd forget. Then I heard a siren and that was the last thing I remember before blacking out.Maya's POV:
It was on call tonight in the station, I hardly slept yesterday so I felt like I could fall asleep any minute. When I had a spare five minutes I went into one of the spare rooms and laid on the beds just to take a nap and that's when I dreamt of her. Flora crying and begging me for help whilst the flames surrounded her, it was horrible, the past two years not a day had gone by where I didn't think of her.
I jumped out of my skin, and I was brought back to reality by the sound of the alarm, it was a call saying 2 males had attacked a young girl and started a huge fire in a park. What on earth was a young girl doing, alone in a park at 4am. I was soon enough going to find out. I was on call with my best friend Andy, we both ran down and bumped into each other as we hopped into the fire truck and got going straight away. I always hated calls involving children after what happened with Flora, I'm scared for the pain they'll have to go through and I don't want to form an attachment to them like I did to her.As we reached the park we could see the flames lighting up the sky but there wasn't a girl or the people who attacked her in sight. We quickly worked hard to start putting the fire out as we called for back up and were joined by another team, we soon realised the fire had been started by clothes set alight and they must've belonged to the girl. I offered to be the one to go and look for her, for some reason I felt like I had to. I stepped into the scene and looked around, the park was filled with smoke and now dead trees but in one dark corner, I could swear I saw the figure of a girl laying flat on the floor. As I made my way over a trail of blood led the way, I prayed she wasn't dead and I radioed straight away and asked for the team to standby and call an ambulance. The attackers had clearly fled the scene, but they'd left all the evidence we needed. The body was on its side as I crouched beside and tapped her shoulder, she was freezing. I yelled for help and people started to run over, as I turned her over knowing this would be a desperate attempt to save her life, my heart stopped. I knew that face. It was Flora.
