The summer air swirled around the hybrid's horns, filling their body with cool air. Blizzard opened up their eyes, searching thoroughly for their mother and father. They were nowhere to be seen. Blizzard leaped up off of their leaf bed, flinging one of the leaves to the far end of the hut. The hybrid yawned, a small whiff of frost breath escaped their mouth. Blizzard wasn't feeling a bit reassured, their parents were gone and they didn't know what to do. They always leaned on them for support whenever they felt like they didn't belong, which they believe was very true. They were a hybrid in a world against them. Blizzard frilled their icy spikes along their spine and walked out into the hot sun.
I bet they're out hunting...but they didn't leave a note.
Blizzard didn't know what to think as they shifted their talons across the sand. Just before they were about to turn back home and get some more rest, they heard hushed voices.
"Where were you last night!" roared the first voice, "Your dragonet was worried sick for you!" Blizzard stayed silent in shock, they never heard their mother yell before.
"Snowflake I-I had to take a longer way around, you don't know who could be watching," said the second voice.
"Well maybe you should actually take risks" said Snowflake, "we have taken many risks together, you promised me we would do this together!" The hybrid looked down at their own talons, knowing they were different.
"I never said I won't take any more risks!" loudly whispered the second voice, "I love our dragonet with all of my heart, but I can't risk losing them...or you." The second voice quieted down and Blizzard heard a muffled sob. The hybrid heard their mother's tail slither across the sand and twine it with their father's.
"Hey, it's okay to worry Tide," softly spoke Snowflake, "not every risk you should take, but know that I'll always be here for you...I'm not going anywhere anytime soon." Snowflake and Tide sat beside each other for comfort. Neither of them noticed their dragonet walking up to them, confused as to what had just occurred. Blizzard's grey-blue eyes looked up to their parents. Snowflake had her snout placed below Tide's crook of his neck. Tide looked down at the sand and noticed his dragonet. Tide opened up his wings and Blizzard wriggled into them, the hybrid felt safe. Tide shifted his wings to get his mate's attention and pointed towards their dragonet. Snowflake's eyes widened in surprise and Blizzard thought that maybe they weren't supposed to hear that conversation.
"Mom," said the hybrid, "Am I one of the risks you took?" Snowflake looked towards Tide for help in answering this question.
"Blizz, dear," started Snowflake, "you are the best risk I have ever taken, your father and I will always love you...never feel bad about who you are." Blizzard wriggled towards their mother's wings and nuzzled up close to her. The hybrid always wanted to explore beyond the barrier of their island.
What is the rest of Pyrrhia like?Blizzard always asked themself that question each night, dreaming of the endless desert of the Kingdom of the Sand and the beauty of the Harmony Palace. They wanted to know what else they could do for the world, but alas, they could not. Blizzard's eyes drooped as sleep pulled them in. The last thing they remembered before falling into a deep slumber was their father's voice.
"We aren't safe here anymore Snowflake," Tide paused, looking down at their slumbering dragonet. "The Talons knew where I was last night, I couldn't risk them finding you...or Blizzard," said Tide, "It would haunt me to know that either you or Blizzard were injured...or worse, dead." Blizzard groggily awoke to find their parent's entwined around them. The hybrid sighed deeply, carefully untwining their tail around their parents. Blizzard stood up, shaking their icy spikes to get the excess salt water off of them. They weren't very sure about what was next for them, their father's words were haunting them. Who's the Talons? Went through Blizzard's mind over and over. The dragonet grabbed a banana from one of the tables. They are almost a full grown dragon, why can't they take one more risk? Blizzard's ears picked up the stirring of dragon wings above their hut. They hurried over to their father and mother and shook their father awake. "Dad!" urgently whispered Blizzard. Tide opened up his eyes and squinted at his dragonet. "Dad, I hear dragon wingbeats," Tide rapidly awoke, fear entering his eyes. Tide lightly nudged Snowflake awake and nuzzled her. Blizzard told their mother what they heard and she also got worried. Why would they get more worried, dragons fly over this island over and over. Just then, Tide cautiously inched out to peek above. Tide quickly moved his head back inside.
"We need to go, now Snowflake," Tide gripped his tail nervously, "They found us." Blizzard thought that the 'they' are the Talons.
"Blizz, you need to hide," urgently said their mother.
"But mom, I want to help!" retorted Blizzard. Snowflake looked down at her dragonet, tears forming in her eyes.
"Your safety is the most important thing to me, dear," said Snowflake, "you need to fly away as far and as fast as you can." Snowflake grabbed their dragonet close, hugging them tightly. Blizzard was now sobbing into their mother's wings. They didn't want to leave their parents, but their wish is coming true. They are about to see what Pyrrhia was really like. Tide picked up Blizzard, whispering to them.
"Your mother and I will find you again, do not worry," began Tide, "remember to stay safe and out of trouble." Blizzard held onto their father, softly sobbing. "I love you, Blizz," Tide looked into Blizzard's eyes and set them down. Snowflake placed a leaf pouch around Blizzard's neck.
"This will get you at least a week, please be safe," said Snowflake, pulling in her dragonet for a fierce hug. Snowflake's snowflake earring was blowing in the wind, illuminating the light reflected from the light from the sun. Blizzard was scared for their life for the first time in forever, they had no plan to where to go next. Snowflake got down to her dragonets level, unclipped her earring and placed it in Blizzard's talons. "Blizz, your father and I will be right here when you come back. Let this earring be your guide, I love you so much," Snowflake closed Blizzard's talons over the earring, soft tears exiting her eyes. Blizzard looked around for their father. Once they spotted him, the whole world was shifted upside down. The door to their hut was instantly incinerated in seconds.
Pandemonium erupted in the hut as leaves were burning everywhere. Smoke blurred Blizzard's vision, leaving them slightly blind in the haze of the smoke. Blindly walking through the smoke, the hybrid was able to find the back entrance, taking one last look at their childhood home.
Now's not the time to cry, I need to keep going...and stay safe just as mother wanted me to be. Blizzard opened up their talons, which were still grasping onto their mother's earring. They clipped the snowflake earring on their right ear and opened up their wings and flew into the sky. The last thing they heard was a loud crack and Snowflake's cry of despair. Blizzard feared that this was just the start of a new danger and that they needed to find safety somewhere. Looking back for one last look, Blizzard saw a group of cloaked dragons dragging a limp dragon across the sand. One of those dragons caught the body of the hybrid, calling on their other dragons to follow them.
I need to hide and fast!
