Kourtney's POV

It was the first day we were starting to perform the musical. Only a few songs were written, but we were making sure they would work and wanted to see how they were delivered. Howie, too busy this summer to join (even though he went to North High we offered him a part, which he had to decline), drove me there and came for moral support. I was supposed to be singing.

The musical's plot was, so far, kind of all over the place. There was a break up song (Last Kiss by Ashlyn), and a few other songs that were yet to be named (written by various groupings). Most of us had managed to play character opposite our boyfriends or girlfriends, which was part of the joy of an original musical. Of course, the musical was far from Broadway level, but it was fun.

Today we were only running two songs, one of which was my solo. The other was a duet between Gina and EJ. As far as I knew they were still only having massive crushes on each other, but they looked a lot more comfortable than usual when I arrived at Miss Jenn's house. One awkward fact happened to be they were singing a song that was a post break up song.

My hand intertwined with Howie's, we walked over to Miss Jenn's garage. Yes, it was odd, but it was a bit like a garage band. Something about the low budget gave it charm that wouldn't come otherwise. The charm was necessary, or it would look like we were trying too hard considering the quality of everything else.

"Good luck Kourt." Howie planted a kiss on my cheek. I blushed, still not used to it. "Well, break a leg."

"Thanks." I smiled. We got into the garage, where everyone else was. They were grouped up, as they usually tended to be. Ricky was with Big Red. EJ, Gina, Seb, and Carlos were talking; Ashlyn and Nini sitting together. Miss Jenn was standing next to Mr. Mazzara, who must have been there for some technical reasoning. Howie went to sit with Big Red and Ricky. I went to Nini and Ashlyn and sat down.

"Hey, what's up?" I asked them.

"Not much." Nini shrugged.

"So you guys really think my song is good?" Ashlyn checked. She kept checking, despite the fact we all liked it and weren't running it today.

"Of course." Nini and I said in unison.

"Thanks." She smiled. "But, I mean, yours are so good. And all the group ones."

"Well, songs are hard to write by yourself sometimes." Nini nodded. "The inspiration is way easier around people."

"This conversation is awkward considering I've never written besides about two lines for this." I chuckled.

"Sorry." Ashlyn apologized.

"Let's start!" Miss Jenn announced. "Gina, EJ, you two wanna start?"

"Oh... yeah, sure." EJ glanced nervously at Gina. He never got nervous, and it was weird for him to show that to Gina, considering it was a break up song. You'd think he would want to hide his crush. Gina glanced back nonetheless.

The two of them went to the middle of the stage nonetheless. Since we didn't have any instruments available, Ashlyn turned on the backing track she had put together after we wrote the song.

"Great job!" Miss Jenn clapped, all of us joining in. I realized I was not the only one who noticed that when Miss Jenn moved her hands down from the clap, it (probably on accident) slowly made its way to Mr. Mazzara's. He held it. We were all staring at them. They looked down at their hands.
