Lily Evans and James Potter have never gotten along. In fact, the rivalry between the two had only grown since it first started at the age of eleven. James being the schoolyard bully had not helped the two to overcome their differences. Especially, since James' favourite victim happened to be Lily's best friend. Lily would hurl insults at James and James would pretend they didn't hurt him at all. It is also due to this rivalry that they never noticed how similar they really were. Both concerned with being accepted. James trying to be the perfect little Pureblood he was expected to be and Lily trying to fit into the wizarding world despite being a Muggleborn. As they grew older, however, they started to see each other differently. It is often said that there is a thin line between live and hate. Lily and James found themselves walking this tightrope and tipping more and more to the other side. As 5th year passed, the two started to acknowledge their own feelings. Lily found herself unable to tear her eyes away when James flew by on his broom. James never failed to mockingly compliment Lily, although, it was becoming less and less mocking. It is now 6th year and Hogwarts decided to create dorm rooms for two for the whole of 6th year. Needing to comply to the wishes of the school, the headmaster orders that each dorm is to have one boy and one girl.
As the 6th years go into their first classes, the teachers hand them a piece of parchment with the name of the person they will be sharing a dorm with and what room they have. Lily uncertainly sits down at her desk in DADA. The professor walks up to her and hands her a parchment. Her hands shake as she folds it open. James Potter, Gryffindor Tower, Lavender Room Lily suppresses a small smile. She has to admit, she is excited to be paired with the boy she has a minor, ok major, crush on. Little does she know, three rows behind her, James Potter is looking at the back of her head fantasizing about how it will be.
The rest of the day passes extremely slowly. Both Lily and James are dying with anticipation and worry. They don't know whether to be excited or scared about the situation they are in. As their final class, draw to an end, Lily bolts out of the room and runs towards Gryffindor Tower. An announcement is hanging on the bord:
6th Years Dorm Passwords:
White Room: Ignis
Blue Room: Hippogriff
Lavender Room: Cotton Candy
Maroon Room: Phoenix Canariensis
Golden Room: Terra
Pink Room: Chocolate Frogs
Turquoise Room: Patronus
Yellow Room: Metamorphosis
Note: Your passwords will change once a month and will from now on only be displayed on the boards in your rooms. You will be eating breakfasts in your rooms and come to the great hall for lunch and dinner, unless you prefer to spend them in your rooms. If you have any questions, please address the headgirl and headboy. For any inquiries about cleaning and cooking supplies, ask the house elves in the kitchens.
Lily makes her way to the stairs that led up to the dorms. There, before her, stand eight doors. Each one had a different colour. Lily walks over to the lavender coloured door. She looks at it before taking out her wand. She mumbles a spell under her breath and some dried lavender appeared. It is bound with a lavender piece of string. She sticks it onto the door. Satisfied with her work she says: "Cotton Candy." The door springs open and the sight before her eyes is unbelievable. The entire room is themed in lavender. To her left stands a sofa and to her right is a marble kitchen island. There is a stove, a sink, and a few muggle kitchen appliances. At the back of the room stand two beds, separated from the rest of the room by a wall. Next to the sofa is another door leading to the bathroom. It is a small bathroom with a bathtub, a basin and a toilet. Lily absolutely loves the dorm. She skips over to the beds and grabs a random book out of her bed, throwing it on the right bed, claiming it. She always sleeps with the wall to her left at home. She sits down and looks around the room deciding what to do next. She doesn't really feel like going down to dinner, now that she knows she can cook for herself. Lily really loves cooking. She walks over to the kitchen and checks in the cupboards and the little refrigerator for ingredients. She decides to make her favourite cake, a healthy banana sponge cake. (A/N: this is an actual recipe I made, dm me for the ingredients list and instructions :)) She grabs the whole grain flowers, the brown sugar, two bananas, coconut oil, baking powder, some vanilla, and the soy milk. She takes out a large mixing bowl and the electric mixer. She can't believe there are actually plugs at Hogwarts! She adds the ingredients and starts mixing. Lining the baking tray with baking paper, she pours the batter in and shoves it in the oven. It takes only a few minutes before the entire room smells of baked goods. It's a delicious smell that always reminds her of when she was small, and her mum used to bake for her birthday. Lily is so focused on her baking, she hardly notices when James comes through the door, marauders in tow. "Hey Evans, watcha doin'?", he asks, genuinely interested. Peter smells the air and walks over to the oven. "I'm baking, Potter.", replies Lily. Remus sits down on the sofa. "Lily, that smells amazing!", he compliments. Lily smiles at Remus. They have been friends forever. In fact, Lily was one of the first people to know about his furry little problem. Peter taps Lily on the shoulder. "Hey, uh, could I have the recipe some time?", he asks. Lily smiles. "Of course, Peter! I didn't know you could bake. Now that we all have kitchens, we have to bake something together sometime, yeah?", she asks. Peter just nods. Sirius has made himself comfortable on the bed Lily had left her books on. "Uh, Black? Are you blind?", she asks him, slightly annoyed. No one steals Lily Evans' spot. Sirius is quick to get up. "Oops, sorry.", he says shuffling away. You don't mess with an annoyed Lily. Even Mr. Badboy knows that. James leans over to Sirius. "She's pretty can bake AND is smart. What else could one ask for!", he stage whispers. Lily shoots him a playful glare. When the boys walked in, they left the door open, and the smell of the cake is now wafting along the 6th years corridor. It takes Marlene and Dorcas little time to stick their heads in the door. "Lily, yall baking? And we ain't been invited?", Dorcas asks. Lily looks at her friends. "Sure, uh, come in. If there is enough space...", she says uncertainly. It is getting a bit cramped in the little room. Lily is busy transfiguring two forks into extra chairs when the timer goes off. "Don't worry, I got it!", James exclaims. "No! Peter, you get it out please!", Lily yells back. James looks at her hurt. He pouts slightly. Lily finds this too adorable. "Don't want you to burn your pretty little hands, do we?", she flirts shamelessly. A blush creeps up on James' face and he is quick to cough and burry his head in his pillow. Marlene smirks at Lily. "Progress hun. Good for you!", she says. Lily looks at her pointedly. She walks over and looks at the cake. She pulls out some cream cheese and starts creaming it with a bit of birch sugar. Lily scoops the cream onto the cake and cuts it into slices. "So, yall hungry people, who wants a slice?", she asks. James, Dorcas, Marlene and Sirius all reach for a slice at once. They take a bite. "That's a slice of heaven alright!", James says. Sirius does a dramatic faint. Remus walks over and takes a slice. He looks impressed. "'All I knew, this morning when I woke' was cake. This is not cake. This is like heaven.", Remus says. Lily smiles. She has never been complimented this much before. "Wow Evans, I could kiss you for creating this!", exclaims James. Sirius and Dorcas look at each other knowingly while Remus just rolls his eyes. Lily is slightly confused but hides it behind a dismissive smile. She puts the plate down on the counter. "Well, you all know the password and theirs probably going to be something baked here on the counter most of the time. I'm going to put a preservation spell on it. So, yeah, I'm going to get ready for bed.", Lily says. She is getting tired. James looks at her sideways. "Shoo tho evil spirits! Leave our humble home!", James says theatrically. Lily smiles at him thankfully before going to hug Marlene and Dorcas. The Marauders do their secret four-way handshake before Sirius skips out of the room and Remus and Peter walk out after him. Lily closes the door after everyone has left. She then looks over at James. "Potter, I shower in the evening.", she says matter-of-factly. "I shower in the morning, so great.", James says. Lily nods in reply and grabs the T-Shirt and shorts she sleeps in. When she walks back in, James has a hard time not staring at her. Lily snaps her fingers in front of James' face. "My eyes are up here.", she says. James smirks apologetically. Lily just rolls her eyes and put her wet hair up in a bun. She slides under her blanket und turns to face the wall. "Goodnight Evans.", she hears Potter say behind her. "Night, Potter.", she replies before her eyes close, and she falls asleep.
It's 1am when James is awoken by silent sobbing next to him. He turn to look at Lily and sees her crying silently. Then, suddenly, she starts to yell. "No! Please! Don't! No! Tuny! Charlie! Mum! No! Dad! Why?!" James walks over to her and taps her shoulder lightly. When she doesn't wake, he shakes her a bit. "Hey, Evans, hey!", no reaction. "Lily, it's fine. It's just a dream. Wake up.", he says. Lily opens her eyes suddenly. They are red from crying. "James?", she asks. James finds himself smiling at how she says his name. He hugs her. "It's fine, ok? Your fine. It was just a dream.", he assures the girl. "Thank you.", Lily mumbles cuddling into his chest. He hugs her tight. They stay like this until James feels Lily's breath evening out. "I will keep you safe, I promise. I love you.", James whispers. He gets up to go back to his own bed when a hand clasps his firmly. "I love you too.", Lily whispers back before falling asleep. A huge smile spreads across his face.
James gets up early in the morning and goes over to Peter's room. "Ignis", he whispers to the door and sneaks in. "Peter, wake up!", he whispers as he shakes Peter awake. "Uh, watcha want? It's too early.", Peter says. "Can I borrow your secret pancake recipe?", James asks knowing Peter never lets anyone borrow his pancake recipe. "Yeah, whatever.", Peter says. James smirks. Tires Peter is deaf Peter. He grabs the folded paper with the recipe from Peter's recipe folder and makes his way back to his own room. He gets out the electric mixer and thanks god for Lily's deep sleep and his mom for teaching him about muggle kitchen appliances. He mixes the batter and heats a pan. He takes out two plates and starts making pancakes. It is 8 o'clock by the time he is done. He pours some syrup over the two stacks and goes to wake up Lily. "Wakey wakey sleeping beauty!", he says. Lily turns towards him and opens one eye. "What time is it?", she asks. "Eight.", says James. Lily's eyes are now wide open she sits up. "Breakfast has already started!", she yelps. James grins and hands her a fork and one of the plates. "That's right!", he says. Lily smiles at him. James sits down on his own bed looking at Lily. "You know, I 'know something now I didn't before.'", he says. "Is that so, James?", Lily says, making a point of using his first name. James nods. "Do you know what I mean?", James asks. Lily looks confused. "'All I know is we said, "Hello"', she mocks. James looks scared for a moment. Could she really not remember? Lily laughs before putting the plate on the bedside table. She walks over to James and hugs him. "Of course, I know what you mean!", she says. James has never been more relieved in his life (except maybe the one time he was stuck on a roof with Sirius and Peter helped them down before either Mrs. Potter or Remus found out). James pulls back a bit and looks into Lily's eyes. "' And your eyes look like comin' home'" Lily smiles. "Hopeless romantic. I knew it. Marlene owes me a galleon.", Lily jokes. "You started calling me James.", James points out. Lily looks at him. "' All I know is a simple name.'", she says. "'And everything has changed.'", James adds. Lily nods. "Now we really have to get going!", she yells and goes to the bathroom to change. When she comes back, James is struggling with his tie. "James, don't you know how to put on a tie?", Lily asks him. James sits down on his bead and sighs. "Remus always did my tie.", he explains. Lily smiles and takes it from his hand. She ties his tie for him. "There you go. Now grab your stuff and let us go." James grabs his bag and holds the door open for Lily. Lily walks through and waits for him. Lily looks into his eyes. "'All I know is you held the door.'", she says impressed by his gentlemanliness. "'You'll be mine and I'll be yours.'", says James offering her his hand. She takes it and starts walking, swinging their joined hands between them. "'All I know since yesterday, is everything has changed.'", says Lily before they join their friends to go to class.
