Peter has never had many friends. The kids at the muggle primary school his mum had made him go to had teased him for being chubby. The kids at Hogwarts would call him stupid and say he was a Squib. He only managed to get by because he was friends with the legendary Marauders. Peter was however, a kind and loyal boy. He loved his friends dearly and would do anything for them. He had a particularly good friendship with Remus, with whom he could talk about anything.

The bell rings and Peter and Remus leave for the library while James and Sirius head to the quidditch pitch. Peter and Remus walk over to the Marauders designated space in the library. Since they have been using it since first year, everyone just accepted that it was theirs. Peter opens his books in front of him. He has been studying every day since they came back to school. He is desperately trying to improve his grades while also running early in the morning to lose weight. He is tired, overworked, and hungry because he skipped lunch. The words on the page before him are staring to swim and move, his eyelids are drooping, and he wants to just fall asleep. Remus looks at him worriedly. "Hey Pete, are you alright?", he asks. Peter looks at him and slightly shakes his head. Remus closes the book he was reading and turns his full attention to his friend. "Wanna talk about it?", he encourages the other boy. "Uh...it's just... like all my friends are perfect. Like Sirius, he's real hot and gets so much action, and James, he's rich and sporty, and you, your super smart. And all of you are finding love in people. And then there's me.", Peter explains uncertainly. "Pete, you know that's not true! Your great! You can bake, you are super kind." Peter just shakes his head. "That's not the point! 'Often I am upset, that I cannot fall in love.'", Remus is about to but in, but Peter raises his hand. "'But I guess this avoids the stress of falling out of it.'" Remus just nods. He has been through a few break ups, and it wasn't nice. Peter looks at the book in front of him. "'Are you tired of me yet?'", he asks Remus. "Peter, look at me!", Remus encourages. Peter looks up uncertainly. "Look, I would never be tired of you, alright? And if you have a few problems and you need some time, that's fine." Peter shrugs. "Well, 'I'm a little sick right now but I swear' I am working on it." "And that's what is important!", Remus replies. "Now let's stop by the student's potions store so I can get the ingredients we need to write an essay on, ok?" Peter nods. They pack up their stuff and go down to the dungeons.

Sitting in an alcove near the Slytherin common rooms and opposite the student's potion store is one of Slytherin's meanest gangs. The Basilisks. The biggest bullies in school who, somehow, know everyone's secrets. The smallest of the gang, Eve, is the look out. She has spotted the approaching Gryffindors. "Hey, Dash, Bite!", she alerts the two guards. Their job is to walk up behind the victim and make sure they can't escape. They are now creeping up behind the Gryffindors. "ID, who are they?", asks Hiss. ID's real name is Ivana Dunker, but she has got herself the nickname ID because her task is to identify the victim. Hiss knows everything about everyone. And then Parsel has to use his threatening deep voice to insult and mock the victim. Then there is the chorus. Three other Slytherins who position themselves around the victim and insult them making them feel trapped and alone. Hiss turns to Parsel. "Depressed nerd Marauder and chubby sidekick.", she informs. When it comes to the Marauders, they all know the info. When Peter and Remus are right in front of the store is when the Basilisk make themselves known. "'Get a load of this monster!'", Parsel spits in Remus' face. Remus tries to reply but just stutters something incoherent. The chorus flares up around them "'He doesn't know how to communicate.'" Parsel laughs. "'His mind is in a different place.'", says Parsel, throwing the book Remus was clutching in his hand to the floor. Remus is obviously starting to panic. His breathing is quickening. "'Will everybody please give him a little bit of space.", the chorus mocks. "'Get a load of this train-wreck!'", Parsel spits. "Lupin!", Dash calls. "Look at me when I call you!" Remus is so panicked he doesn't know where he is supposed to look. "You're Lupin, right?!", the voice asks. Someone pulls his hair. "'His hair's a mess and he doesn't know who he is yet.'", the chorus chimes in. Peter suddenly pushes the kid who pulled Remus' hair. "Hey you little fuckers! Who do you think you are?! So high and mighty because you are pure blooded! All that means is that you come from a long line of incest!", Peter yells. Parsel looks at Hiss, the real brains of the gang. "I say we shove em in that classroom. I've got the keys.", she suggests. The guards come up behind the two boys and shove them in the classroom. The lock clicks shut, and Remus and Peter are stuck. Remus starts shaking uncontrollably and sobbing. He can barely feel the hand on his shoulder. "Hey, Remus! I'm here!", Peter tries to get through to the panicking boy. "Ugh, 'I can't really think right now in this place.'", says Peter. "'But I'll figure out a way to get us out of here!'", he assures. That's when he remembers the hairpin, he uses to keep his hair out of his face when studying. He sticks it into the door and starts turning it in the lock. The lock clicks open. Peter pushes the door open and hauls Remus into a piggyback, telling him to hold on. How he managed to carry the heavier and taller boy all the way back to Gryffindor tower, he would never know.

Peter would always remember that encounter. He had always known Hogwarts wasn't the safest place on earth, 'But strangely he feels at home in this place.'
