The streets of England remain busy. Everyone living in their own world and going to certain places not noticing the rest of us. My business today relies with one place and one place only. Enlisting into the army to do battle.
I stand in a standard coat everyone else around me seems to be wearing and hat in front of the single wooden desk at the front of the building with the single man dressed in his uniform, who has been looking at enlisting papers probably all morning.
"Are you sure you're eighteen?" The man at the table asks staring at me with concentrated eyes.
"Why do I look older?" I reply trying to actually seem older. He looks at me and holds his hand out, a clear order for me to hand him my papers. I try to cooly hand it over but the act comes out rushed and nervous.
He glances at it and doubt crosses his face, "Alberta Scrubb?" He asks not believing one bit of my completely fake papers.
"That's a typographical error actually it is Albert A. Scrubb," I lie to him quickly.
"Edmund," I hear a voice say from the doorway and see my sister, Lucy, "You're supposed to be helping me with the groceries," Lucy says and the laughter and chuckles of the other men behind me fill the hall.
The man at the desk closes my papers and hands it back to me as the men, I'm sorry boys, continue to laugh and as I'm walking out the man behind me pats my head and says, "Better luck next time, eh squirt?"
I ignore him and continue to follow Lucy, who is carrying a box of groceries. I walk out fuming with what happened. What nerve that guy had to call me. The sky is dark and cloudy today, not a surprise. Probably going to rain again too no doubt.
"Squirt?" I repeat as I catch up with Lucy, "He barely had two years on me," I continue as I grab the box of groceries from Lucy, "I'm a king. I've fought wars and I've led armies."
"Not in this world you aren't," Lucy sighs as I start to tie the box to my cart.
"Yeah. Instead, I'm stuck here doing battle with Eustace Clarence Scrubb. If anyone so deserves a name," I complain and I look up to see Lucy looking at something and strokes her cheek.
"What are you doing?" I ask her as I finish roping the groceries onto my cart.
She snaps her attention to me, "Nothing," she replies softly, "Come on then," she says pushing the cart forward.
The walk back to the house is silent and my thoughts are only filled with Narnia. For the first time in almost three years I'm letting myself remember it all. It all feels like a lifetime ago and so far away. The memories get harder and harder to remember. They aren't as clear as they once were. Lucy still remembers every detail of our adventures in Narnia, figures. I hope I never forget.
We walk into our current residence and find the radio is playing. Lucy is the one to announce our arrival, "I'm home! Hello?"
I look around to see if anyone is here and sure enough there's Uncle Harold slouching in his chair with his nose buried in the daily newspaper not even bothering to look up.
"Hello Uncle Harold," Lucy kindly greets seeing him and steps past him and into the kitchen. He doesn't answer her so she continues, "I tried to find some carrots, but all they had were turnips again," she announces as she sets her box down.
