I pushed off the thought of the compromise as I tried to enjoy the beginning of my journey. The only way out of the small town of Springlake was west to route one. As all the routes all linked together at some point to lead here, and the lab where select few people get their starter, this small town was considered the beginning of the Kimandra region.
There's was loads of tall grass in route one, at least two thirds of the route was covered with it. More Pokemon for me! ... Wait...
How do I catch a Pokemon?
I mean, I throw one of the Pokeballs the grunt gave me at it but is that all? Do I have to attack it first? The grunts gave me tools, but never taught me...
I just stood in place, listing thought and looking like a puzzled moron.
"Um... Do you need help..?" I jumped from surprise and looked for the owner of the voice. I saw a boy a few years older than me.
He gathered up his mass of black hair into a small ponytail before continuing. "I'm Ren. You look rather... Lost."
"O-oh!" I stuttered, hanging my head in embarrassment. "I just started my j-journey... But no one ever actually taught me how to catch Pokemon..."
"That's a shame. At least a Pokemon breeder actually knows how to help! Want me to show you?"
My eyes brightened in excitement. "Yes, please." I say calmly out of habit and my shy nature. I grabbed a Pokeball out from my bag, ready to catch one once Ren showed me how.
"Okay, follow me." He said. He walked over to Route One, and dashed into the grass. I watched as a Pokemon jumped at him. A Deino I think?
It's hard to know what Pokemon you'll find on a route, because a Pokemon could be anywhere. They move around all the time. If you're unlucky, you could encounter a Tyranitar on route one.
Ren sent out a Pokemon that he was probably raising- a Kadabra. The Kadabra weakly hit the Deino, but with the difference in strength, it nearly knocked the baby dinosaur out. Then, Ren threw a Pokeball. It shook for a few seconds, then stopped.
Ren picked up the Pokeball and walked over to me. "See, not so bad!"
"Thanks." I smiled a little to show my appreciation.
"No problem! Well, see you some time again, girl-- wait, what is your name?"
"Emilia." I replied, feeling slightly intimidated as he stared at me with his dull grey eyes.
"Okay! Well, see you sometime again, Emilia!" He said before sending out a Staraptor and flying away.
Well, now that he's gone...
Time to catch a Pokemon!
I ran into the tall grass, searching for something to catch. So enough, a tiny little Gible jumped up and got into a fighting stance.
"Oh, um, Go Turtwig!" I shouted unsurely, throwing the Pokeball holding Turtwig.
"Tur!" He shouted, getting ready to fight. I remember one grunt telling me that my Pokedex will show Turtwig's moves. I pulled it out and opened it up. Tackle, withdraw, and absorb.
"Use... absorb!" I shouted, and he obeyed. It hit pretty hard, but it didn't do as much as that Kadabra had done.
Suddenly, the ground in this area was shaking; the Gible was using earthquake.
Both Turtwig and I lost our balance and fell to the ground. "Quick, get up Turtwig and use tackle again!" I shouted. Turtwig obeyed, and he ended up hitting Gible slightly harder than last time. Now's my chance! I threw the Pokeball at Gible. The red beam of light sucked the Gible into the Pokeball, and it fell to the soft ground below. Then it shook. Once... Twice... Three times... Then, I heard a click sound. That means I caught it!
"Wow, I caught a Pokemon on my first ever try!" I shouted, running the Pokeball and picking it up. I don't think I'll release him until I heal him at the Pokemon Centre.
Well, I did it! And now I know just how little I actually know about this... Well, I'll learn it as I go! Now, once I get to Canoa City, I can heal Gible!
"Tur!" Turtwig exclaimed, looking exhausted. I chuckled and put him in his Pokeball.
Well, I'm off to a good start! I made sure everything was secure, then bolted towards Canoa Coty, dodging the wild Pokemon.
Maybe I can find a way out of the compromise...!
