A week after the incident, things were finally getting back to normal. The stalker got transferred to a different school, Esme had apologized to Lauren about the things she said, and Noah had started to talk to me a bit more.
One day, Lauren and I began to walk home together when Noah surprised us from behind us.
"Noah!" I yelled.
Noah grinned, "Sorry, sorry. Lauren, here. I totally forgot to give it to you in class." He took out a chocolate milk carton and handed it to Lauren.
Lauren glanced at me, then back at Noah. "Thanks." Why did I feel a sense of jealousy?
Noah nodded, "Of course. Now, I have to go to work. Enjoy your day off, haha."
Lauren and I waved at him while he walked the opposite direction of us.
"Noah's so sweet!" squealed Lauren.
I smiled, "Mhm hmm."
"Hey, I just wanted to ask you this since there's a ton of gossip going around."
I stopped walking and looked at her. "What?"
"Do you... like Noah? Like more than friends?" she wanted to know.
I laughed. "That's complicated. I think I do, but he doesn't see me that way, as you can probably tell."
Lauren shrugged. "Well, thanks for telling me."
"Oh, hey! Your mom told me she ordered takeout for us. Come on!"
Lauren grabbed my arm. "She's your mom too now, Amelia."
"Right. Anyways, come on!" I grabbed her arm and we took off running towards our house.
Before we walked in, I turned to Lauren.
"Please stay away from Noah, okay? Or make it clear you don't like him. Promise?"
Lauren bit her lip and looked down. "Promise. Let's go in now."
So we did. I hope Lauren will keep her promise.
