109: Mushroom Kingdom Recruitment

ACT ONE

INT. STADIUM - MORNING

The Mario Kart 8 stadium has empty seats. Faintly, zooming karts crescendo into sound, then:

Zoom! 10 karts zoom by at a lightning quick speed and navigate the many twists, turns and obstacles of the track.

Mario, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, DK, SHY GUY, TOADETTE, ROY KOOPA, LEMMY, and LARRY are the neck and neck drivers.

They speed past the checkered line. LAKITU floats down to flash the "final lap" sign and play the diddy from the games.

PEACH
No way any of you are winning this, Toadette. Get ready to join our army once I cross the line first.

TOADETTE
No, get ready to build me my own castle so I don't have to go back to Toad...once I cross the line!

Shy Guy zooms past them both.

SHY GUY
(quiet)
Too bad Shy Guy never loses and is going to win all that gold coin for himself hip hip hooray.The three koopalings bash into Shy Guy to try to run him off.

LARRY
Get out of here Shy Guy! The koopalings need this win!

LEMMY
We're going to rebuild our village's town hall that Roy burned down with that gold coin prize.

ROY KOOPA
Aw hey guys it was an acciden-

Roy unleashes some fire from his mouth accidentally that screws up the pindown for the other koopalings.

They swerve and have to be avoided by the other drivers right on all their tails. Rosalina giggles.

ROSALINA
Isn't this so much fun, Luma? Oh boy look ahead: item boxes!

Shy Guy, Daisy, Peach, Toadette, and Mario hit the boxes as they skid around the sharp turn and almost ram each other.

ROSALINA
Oh we'll get them next time.

Peach uses a mushroom as a speed boost and closes in on Shy Guy. He gets a banana and instantly throws the peel behind.

DK's goes crazy for it, targets it, and wipes out.

DK
Donkey Kong always fall for bananas! Donkey Kong have problem!

SHY GUY
Ha yeah that's what I'm talking a-

Shy Guy is hit by a blue shell that Toadette threw. She cackles as she and the others all pass him.

SHY GUY
Blue shells should be banned.

Mario and Daisy both have green shells in their hands and aim them at Toadette in the lead.

LARRY
It's very offensive to use koopa shells in a race, just saying.

MARIO
No one cares!

Mario whips it and hits Toadette. Peach takes the lead. He smiles at this and takes second place.

Daisy gets angry at this and stares down Mario. She looks at her shell and then behind her kart for someone not there.

She yells out as she whips her's hard at Mario. It's a huge impact on his kart and he completely skids out.

Everyone passes him. He's pointed the wrong way when he finally stops skidding. He looks angrily ahead at Daisy.

Lakitu floats over to Mario with the u-turn sign.

LAKITU
Hey Mario! Mario you're pointed the wrong way. Mario the race is that-

MARIO
Yeah I know, Lakitu!

Peach locks onto the finish line closing in. She constantly checks behind her. Shy Guy gains speed.

PEACH
No blue shells no blue shells-

Shy Guy catches up to her. The finish line is right there. They bump a bit, they're close, Lakitu has the flag ready...

They zoom past the line. Peach wins by just a hair.

LAKITU
And it's Princess Peach by a hair!

Peach skids to a stop. All those who finish stop near her. They watch her do an embarrassing victory dance.

TOADETTE
I bet you're real happy we have to be your soldiers now.

LAKITU
Kind of a weird thing to dance about actually.

Daisy laughs at the dance. She doesn't see the last place Mario zooming in behind her. He stops right beside Daisy.

MARIO
What the actual heck, Daisy?

Mario storms out his kart to her. She readies her earrings. Peach and DK are right there to stand in between.

DAISY
Looks like Doctor Mario need to take one of his own chill pills.

MARIO
Why did you whip a shell at me? We're racing on the same team.

DAISY
Are we?

PEACH
Hey Rosalina, maybe you want to interject with something to lighten up the mood?

ROSALINA
Oh, well I thought that was an excellent shell throw you had there, Daisy. Great form.

DAISY
Would have been better if my double dash partner was throwing it.

PEACH
Okay, that's enough of that. Toadette, Shy Guy, Lakitu, Larry, Lemmy, and Roy Koopa, welcome to the team.

TOADETTE
Yeah seems like a real high-functioning squad we're on.

DAISY
Peach: you either have to stop making excuses for Mario...or he has to get better.

Daisy exchanges an angry look with Mario, and then turns it to Peach. She contemplates what was just said.

Daisy sniffles and storms off to a nearby bench far away from the group. Peach motions to follow.

DK
No, you round up new recruits, I go talk to Daisy.

PEACH
Um, okay. Thanks DK.

Peach talks to the group and keeps Mario at her side. DK heads off and sits beside Daisy on the bench.

DK
I upset too. Would have won race if not distracted by banana again.

Daisy chuckles through her sadness.

DAISY
I don't know what I'm doing here, DK. I just want to hang with Luigi.

DK
Daisy can't switch sides. Donkey Kong, Peach, and others need Daisy.

DAISY
And I need Luigi.

DK spots the nearby Lakitu. He gets up and charges at him.

LAKITU
Hey Donkey Kong, what are you OH MY GOODNESS. WHY!? You smell so bad.

DK grabs Lakitu and pulls him over to Daisy.

DAISY
That's not Luigi, big guy. He doesn't have a moustache.

DK
Donkey Kong have idea.

EXT. KOOPA VILLAGE - MORNING

Koopas of all kinds head throughout the dirty, grimy, and poorly maintained old-timey civilization.

Two KOOPA SHOUTERS try to repair an eavestrough, but it falls off of the building that's clearly rotting.

All koopa eyes are caught by five, cleanr people walking through: Yoshi, MK, Ganondorf, Junior, and Bowser.

Many of the Villagers shout taunts at Bowser and Yoshi.

KOOPA SHOUTER
It's the almighty King Koopa everyone - here to save us again and give us a "better future"!

KOOPA SHOUTER 2
And he brought Mario's pet with him, how nice!

Junior shoots these shouters a dirty look. They laugh.

BOWSER
Ignore them, Junior.

Ganondorf and MK trail behind Junior and Bowser. Yoshi falls back beside them without them noticing.

GANONDORF
These villagers seem angry at their circumstances. They'll make for passionate soldiers in my army.

META KNIGHT

YOSHI
Yoshi.

They turn and notice Yoshi. Ganondorf clenches his fist.

META KNIGHT
See? Now we have to include this guy in on it.

YOSHI
Yoshi.

META KNIGHT
Whoa, he drives a hard bargain, but I think that's fair. The lizard dude gets 95% of the empire we conquer and the two of us will split the remaining 5%.

MK shakes hands with the clueless Yoshi.

YOSHI
Yoshi.

GANONDORF
I will never accept those terms.

EXT. KOOPA VILLAGE PLAZA - CONTINUOUS

Bowser and Junior lead the other three into the plaza with plenty of koopas around giving them the stink eye.

JUNIOR
I'm starting to think coming here was a bad idea.

BOWSER
They're still your siblings, Junior. Nothing will change that.

JUNIOR
They see things too differently from you, Papa.

They get to the middle of the plaza and stop.

BOWSER
That's why I need your young, fresh mind to help me understand these new ideas for equality.

They nod to each other, look up to notice the many stares their way, and then a nearby building burned down.

BOWSER
What happened to the town hall?

LUDWIG (O.S.)
Your baby boy Roy was unsupervised and had an accident.

The five turn to LUDWIG entering the plaza with MORTON and IGGY by his sides. They approach Bowser and Junior.

LUDWIG
If only you were here to give him a good spanking afterwards.

META KNIGHT
Wait, what? Why would he spank a-?

BOWSER
Meta Knight, Ganondorf, these are my SONS Morton, Iggy, and Ludwig.

MORTON
Heya Dad.

IGGY
You guys bring any mushrooms? I could really go for some mushrooms right now if you got some.

META KNIGHT
Some real chips off the ol' block.

GANONDORF
I would not have guessed you had additional offsprings, Bowser.

LUDWIG
Well he sure doesn't like to admit he has other children besides pipsqueak over here.

IGGY
Little boy could use a mega mushroom or two, eh Morton?

MORTON
Heh...yeah. Because mega mushrooms make you bigger, right? That was the joke? That was a good joke.

Junior steps up to his brothers and Bowser holds him back. The other koopalings are bigger than Junior.

BOWSER
Where are the others?

LUDWIG
Always had a tough time keeping us pinned down, didn't you?

BOWSER
When you abandon the cause and leave us at the castle, yeah, I have a tough time keeping track of where you are.

LUDWIG
The cause? Really? You're still on about that? Brainwashing pipsqueak with all that "equality" nonsense?

JUNIOR
I ain't brainwashed and it ain't nonsense! Maybe if you stepped out of this filthy place now and then you'd see what we're working for.

LUDWIG
And maybe if you saw what was going on here in this "filthy place", you'd realize there's no way the toads will ever let us have a sliver of what they have.

BOWSER
What made you think like this? What made you give up hope?

LUDWIG
There was no hope for her...so why should there be hope for us?

Bowser, the koopalings, and especially Junior all take a moment to gulp down some sadness.

META KNIGHT
Okay whatever you guys are talking about seems like a bit much. I don't know if it's just because I'm new here and out of the loop, or-

BOWSER
Where are the others, Ludwig?

LUDWIG
Larry, Lemmy, and Roy are at the racetrack trying to win some gold coin for town hall repairs, and your daughter Wendy has been locked up in the Toad Town dungeon for months now. Not surprised you didn't know that though.

Bowser takes a deep breath and slumps. He looks to Junior who gives him an encouraging motion to step up.

Bowser gains some confidence, steps to the middle of the plaza, and gets the eyes of all the onlooking koopas.

BOWSER
It's been tough for us since the war, and it wasn't easy before either, but I assure you, I've been working to make it less tough.

KOOPA SHOUTER (O.S.)
Kidnapping Princess Peach doesn't do anything!

BOWSER
I did that so we could negotiate the...doesn't matter. What I'm here today to offer all of you is a step to making our lives less tough.

LUDWIG
Toads and the others in this place are never going to accept koopas.

The crowd agrees with Ludwig.

IGGY
We're pretty cool with goombas though, right? The ones that look like mushrooms? I don't eat them.

BOWSER
Maybe they won't accept us today, but there's always tomorrow, and if we join forces with Peach in this war to come, we'll take a step in the right direction to a better tomorrow.

The crowd is in an uproar at the mention of Peach. Ganondorf smirks at this. Bowser struggles to get their attention.

He roars and unleashes fire. This does the trick.

BOWSER
We have been treated terribly in this kingdom, but I know each and every one of you would still fight for it if given the chance.

LUDWIG
Didn't we just do this? How is there already another war?

BOWSER
We've been invaded by outside forces, but this time we fight alongside the monarchy, we show them what we can do, and we take a step in the right direction to being seen as equals.

The crowd murmurs in intrigue about the idea.

LUDWIG
We shouldn't have to do this to be seen as equals. They should just start treating us better.

JUNIOR
You know we can't expect that. We have to share experiences in order for them not to be afraid of us.

BOWSER
We were fighting Yoshi here until we went on a journey together. Now we stand side by side.

YOSHI
Yoshi!

The koopas and even Ludwig show intrigue at the idea.

META KNIGHT
Oh that's why they brought him along. To use as a visual example of...alright. I was wondering why.

BOWSER
(hyping up)
So what do you say? Let's fight for our home, stand by our former enemies, show them who the koopas are, and work towards a better tomorrow for all!

The koopas cheer. Ludwig gives an approving nod to Junior as Bowser hams up the crowd and gets them even more hype.

Ganondorf walks up to Bowser's side and leans up to his ear.

GANONDORF
The power feels good, doesn't it?

Bowser can't help but smirk at this.

ACT TWO

EXT. BOO'S MANSION - NIGHT

The Ice Climbers quickly scale down the mountain and head to the mansion entrance facing them.
