"Nick?" Karl covered my hand on his hip with his own.
"What's up?"
He hummed and then looked up at me. "What are we?"
I sat quietly for a minute, looking at him. "I- I don't know." I bit the inside of my bottom lip. "What do you want to be?"
He rolled his eyes and stood up. "Are you kidding me?" He put his hands on his hips, looking at me. "Did you really just ask that?"
"Wh-."
"What even is this?" He motioned back and forth between me and him. "You tell reporters that were just best friends but you've been calling me baby and we basically live together and- UGH." He covered his face and then uncovered it again, looking at me with fiery eyes. "I fucking love you but I'm starting to think that you just want someone for a couple weeks that you can make out with every once in awhile and it's so- it's so frustrating." He grabbed his keys off the coffee table and flipped me off before leaving, slamming the door shut behind himself.
"Karl, wait." I grabbed my wallet and phone before running after him. I could hear him running down the stairs just below me. I ran after him but when I got down to the lobby he wasn't there. "Shit." I swore under my breath, watching Karl's car leave the parking lot. "Shit, shit, shit." I called an Uber. "Sarah's club and bar, please."
Karl was already on the stage setting up the microphone. Delilah intercepted me as I made my way toward him. "What happened?" She asked, pointing at Karl. "Did you burst at you?" I nodded. "Don't take it personally, he's on his period. He's scary."
"What's he doing?"
"He'll sing it out, just give him a minute." As he started humming into the mic Delilah nudged me. "What did he yell at you about?"
"Me not asking him to be my boyfriend." I held my breath and looked at him.
"Happy one year anniversary Delilah and Sarah. Glad you guys are still going because you're both amazing." He looked at me for a moment before looking away. "This is Honey, Honey and thanks for coming tonight."
"Honey honey how he thrills me, ah-ha, honey honey." He moved his shoulder along to the beat.
"Honey honey, nearly kills me, ah-ha, honey honey
I'd heard about him before
I wanted to know some more
And now I know what they mean, he's a love machine
How he makes me dizzy
Honey, honey, let me feel it, ah-ha, honey honey
Honey, honey, don't conceal it, ah-ha, honey honey
The way that you kiss goodnight
The way that you kiss me goodnight
The way that you hold me tight
The way that you holdin' me tight
I feel like I wanna sing when you do your thing." There was a long guitar solo where Karl moved his shoulder up and down, looking into the crowd.
"Honey, honey, touch me baby, ah-ha, honey honey
Honey, honey, hold me baby, ah-ha, honey honey
You look like a movie star
Look like a movie star
But I like just who you are
But I like just who you are
And honey, to say the least
You're a doggone beast."
Another long guitar solo where he finally made eye contact with me.
"Honey honey, how you thrilled me, ah-ha, honey honey
Honey honey, nearly killed me, ah-ha, honey honey
I'd heard about you before."
He sang more quietly now, still looking at me.
"I wanted to know some more
And now I'm about to see
What you mean to me." He dragged out the me as the guitarist plucked the last few strings. He stared at me for awhile silently as everyone clapped, he finally seemed to snap back into reality and turned back to the audience. "Thanks, thank you." He smiled and put the microphone back, his little dimples appearing as he went to the edge of the stage a grabbed a marker from someone holding it up. "Week seventy eight." Karl yelled, making everyone cheer.
