chapter forty-six: one year (part two)

"thank you so much for coming, ariana." karen smiled as she handed ariana a cup of coffee. the memorial had been small and intimate. a handful of family members and friends had come to pay tribute to the one person that represented such a large part in their lives. while everyone else had gone back to their homes, ariana and njomza accompanied the mccormick's back to their house. mark and miller had gone out for food, while ariana and njomza stayed back with karen. "mark, miller and i truly appreciate it."

"thank you so much for asking me to come." ariana responded while taking the cup. "i wouldn't have missed this for the world."

karen smiled as she turned her gaze to the fireplace in their living room. pictures of malcolm growing up adorned the surface, and karen's lip quivered as she took in the memories that those pictures held within. "i still don't want to believe it is real."

ariana's eyes dropped to her cup as she heard those words. she felt her heart drop as well. "i still expect him to come through those doors during thanksgiving in the next few months, with that big goofy grin of his... eating all the mash before i even have the chance to serve it..." karen chuckled softly before sniffling, tears slowly streaking down her cheek. the memories hurt... but the old and new memories became one. they were her lifeline to her son. her malcolm.

ariana placed her coffee cup on the kitchen counter and approached karen, swiftly wrapping her arms around her. "i'm so sorry, karen. i truly am so sorry."

njomza entered the living room where ariana and karen were, locked in embrace. njomza's expression reflected a sombreness - one that loomed the day. "i don't want to believe it either..." she had said she was going to use the restroom, but she overheard most of the small conversation before interrupting them. "he meant everything to me."

ariana looked at njomza with loving eyes, understanding the pain she too felt. njomza was taken under malcolm's wing and was musically mentored for a number of years. that was how she had become so close with ariana. the breakup lead to the two growing apart, but the distance fortunately didn't last for too long. ariana extended her arm, silently asking her friend to come into their embrace. njomza offered a small smile before walking towards them, arms linked around one another in the loving memory of the one person uniting them to each other. the one person who's profound legacy impacted all that he knew and didn't. the one person who loved openly, and created freely.

u know i never cared for nicholas sparks, but what he said during 'a walk to remember' is true: i'll always miss you. but our love is like the wind. i can't see it... but i can feel it. 🤍
