Harper's POV

The trek to the town hall is filled with tension and apprehension.

Leon walks ahead of me, scoping the area out. My eyes float around the area as well. There isn't much noise anymore.

A gust of wind blows past us, causing my hair to flap around wildly. A faint smell of blood hits my nose, which makes my upper lip curl upwards in disgust.

It doesn't take us long to make it to the town hall. Many of the buildings surrounding it looks like they've been looted. The windows have been smashed; doors are left swinging open. It's like a ghost town.

Shivers crawl down my spine at how dead it is here. It almost reminds me of when I returned to my pack, finding it burnt to the ground.

My feet pad up the three steps and come to a halt when Leon does.

Swallowing the lump in my throat, I pay extra attention to my surroundings, trying to hear any signs of life.

"Leon..." I mutter his name quietly, so quietly, even I can barely hear myself.

He vaguely glances at me. He is determined to win this.

"Stay beside me at all times," He orders, his voice low and commanding. I would usually scowl at him for bossing me around but I know that will only throw his game off.

Leon pushes the doors open and waltzes in with his head held high.

The hall is eerily quiet. It reminds me of an old town hall you would see in movies. There are wooden benches lined on either side of the room, with a walkway in the middle. At the front of the room is a platform where a speaker could stand and preach.

Sat on the front bench, with his elbows on his knees, is Mateo.

He doesn't flinch at the sound of our arrival.

Leon's footsteps stomp on the hard wooden floor, causing the sound to bounce off the walls. I tread lighter, eyeing the room for any weapons and escape exits.

My eyes trail on the many vulgar paintings on the wall in disgust.

Clapping draws my attention away from the walls to the podium, where Alessandra stands with a pleased expression on her pretty face.

A scowl immediately slides onto my face. The first time I met her, I thought she was a blessing in disguise. Sure, she was after the mate I didn't want but she let me go free.
