A knife appeared in my hand and I withdrew Ra from its scabbard. Lukas and I stood back-to-back, unsure of where the threat was.

Suddenly, there was a shrill cry. "Don't hurt me, I swear I didn't do it!" someone yelped behind me.

I turned around, my eyes landing on a child cowering by a tree. Lukas sheathed his knives and stepped forward. He indicated for me to not sheathe Ra.

"We aren't going to hurt you," he murmured. His voice was quiet and soothing. "I'm Lukas. What's your name?"

The little boy peeked up. "Tyde," he answered. "Are you from camp? I don't remember you."

Lukas paused. "I am coming to visit Rachel. Is she around here?"

The boy--Tyde--gawked at him. "Rachel? But she's creepy. No like a cool creepy like Nico, but like a scary creepy."

Lukas chuckled. "Just because someone seems scary sometimes, that doesn't mean they are a scary person."

Tyde still seemed suspicious. "Maybe. Who's your girlfriend?"

I choked while Lukas doubled over laughing. Tyde stared at us, puzzled.

"I'm not-we're not-I-" I stuttered, bright red.

"We aren't dating." Lukas told him after he recovered.

"Why not?" he inquired, which caused me to flush even more.

Lukas leaned in conspiratorially. "Because she's scary." he mock-whispered.

Still flustered, the only thing I could think to do was to stick my tongue out at him.

Tyde giggled. "I can take you to Rachel. She lives in a cave. Like a witch."

"Or a snail." I remarked.

"Or a spider." Lukas agreed.

"Or a mouse."

"Or a caveman."

We followed Tyde through the forest, fighting the occasional monster while listing assorted creatures that dwelt in caves.

Tyde peeked his head into the cave. "She's not here," he whispered.

"Do you know where else she would be?" I murmured.

Tyde shrugged. "Maybe the Big House. But there's no way we could sneak over there."

Lukas nodded. "We'll wait here then."

I agreed with them. Campers kept watch and harpies glided above us. Currently, Lukas and I were ducked under some shrubbery behind the entrance to Rachel's home.

"Why does she live in a cave anyway?" I grumbled as Tyde snuck away from the cave mouth to join us in the bushes.

"Why do creepy people do anything?" Tyde replied.

I nodded. "Fair enough."

Lukas rolles his eyes at us. "Thella, get some rest. Tyde, can you go back to your cabin without being caught?"

Tyde snorted. "Of course I can."

I jumped in. "Hold up, why do I have to sleep and not you?" I objected.

Sternly, Lukas answered, "Because yiu are injured. And," he added, seeing me about to argue, "I'm quieter than you are. Now, go to bed."

Grumbling about his pushiness, I lay down, twisting in the shrubbery. Wet leaves stuck to me, and I swore the rocks were trying to murder me. After five minutes of my restlessly wriggling, Lukas pricked my back with one of his knives. I hissed in protest.

"What was that for?"

"Stop moving," he demanded softly.

I twisted one last time before lying still. After five minutes of lying motionless, I kicked his knee. He glared at me and I smiled back sweetly.

I went to sleep quickly after that, but unfortunately, my ba was feeling restless as well.
