"We should get going." Lukas noted.

"Yep."

"You have your armor?" he checked.

"Yeah."

"And your sword?"

"Yes! Jeez." I grumbled.

"Good." he nodded. "Let's get going."

When we arrived at the meadow again, the crowd had gathered already. I saw several Romans exchange money.

"We have decided!" Reyna declared, muting the whispers of the crowd. "Octavian, Peder, and I have convened. Thella Kane's solution was voted inadiquate, two to one."

My face fell. Heather beside me noticed and squeezed my hand.

Romans began discretely divvying out money.

"The swordmanship compitition will now commence!"

"Ready... set.... go!"

Lukas darted forward with his Imperial Gold sword, testing my guard. I swayed back, not bothering to dodge. I watched him. Meeting my eyes, Lukas gripped his sword. I automatically tensed for a swing that never came.

I stabbed. Lukas parried easily, as expected. I kicked his knee and stabbed at his gut. Twisting just in time, Lukas swung overhead. I blocked with my sword, but Lukas rebounded his sword off mine, and slashed my side. My shirt tore, but, thanks to my armor, I was uninjured.

I decided to go offense. I swung my sword in random combinations, hitting Lukas a few times. But, for the most part, he dodged or blocked.

Over and over, we fought for the upper hand. I blocked out the yelling of the crowd and concentrated on winning. I had to do this.

We fought on. We were both completely focused on the fight. The world could have exploded and we wouldn't have noticed.

We fought like this for five minutes before it happened. Suddenly, a searing pain burst from my right hand. I screamed and dropped my sword. I was hit by an arrow. Lukas whirled around to where the arrow had come from and the crowd was silent with shock. Then they started yelling with disapproval. No one was allowed to interfere with the combat.

"Benly," Lukas snarled. I turned. Benly was standing there, bow in hand, looking at Octavian, who was standing next to him.

"What is the meaning of this?" Reyna demanded.

"Octavian told me to!" Benly burst out.

Reyna raised eyebrow at Octavian.

He pointed to me. "She must be killed! You said that if she won at least four of the five challenges she could stay. But she lost at two, making her acceptance here impossible! She must die!"

Easily swayed, the crowd shouted their agreement.

"But she was given the right to fight in all of the competitions, Octavian." Lukas hissed. "And interference with a competition is against the rules."

"It is against the rules for her to live."

"I don't know if any of you noticed," I spat, cradling my hand, "but I have an arrow in my arm. Can we, oh, I dunno, GET IT OUT?"

"She has to die." Octavian insisted.

Reyna glared. "We will discuss this later, Octavian. For now, Thella will have her hand treated since the rules of the competition were broken." She shot a pointed look at Benly. "We will decide what to do later."

Lukas, fury still burning in his eyes, sheathed his sword and picked up mine.

"Come on. Lets get that arrow out of you."

"I'd appreciate that." I said through gritted teeth. It hurt like the dickens. Heather ran over to us and asked me a thousand times if I was okay on the way to the infirmary tent.
