"Listen, if she doesn't get to a loop the wights will find her and kill her," Vanessa heard one of the Ymbryne escorts tell another Ymbryne. "Not to mention, if she doesn't get into a loop she will age forward at an accelerated rate and we won't be able to save her so either way she will die," The Ymbryne added on. Vanessa tried not to eavesdrop on the conversation as eavesdropping was considered really rude according to her strict mother, but Vanessa couldn't help it. She had been traveling from loop to loop and not a single Ymbryne had the patience to deal with her peculiarity and her constant mood swings. Once her past had been revealed to the last Ymbryne she had run off only to be found by a Ymbryne from the council. She didn't belong in loops, everyone she had encountered in the loops had simple peculiarities such as telekinesis, cryokinesis, time manipulation, and even shapeshifting. Although those weren't all of them. To Vanessa, she didn't feel like she belonged in a loop.
Maybe it's because she hardly felt wanted in the ones she had been in. "We should take her to Miss Peregrine, she should feel at home there," The Ymbryne said. Miss Peregrine? She wasn't going to feel at home there. She hadn't felt at home in her previous loops. Why would she feel at home in a new one? She had every right to be in a peculiar home just as much as someone who could levitate things with their mind. Maybe they didn't like how she could animate effigies to her liking, or how she could sense what everyone was feeling and in return could make them feel other things. She didn't ask to be peculiar, she was just born to be peculiar and although her peculiarity didn't reveal itself until she was thirteen, she still hasn't grown fond of it now that she's sixteen. The Ymbrynes continued their discussion before escorting her to Cairnholm, where Miss Peregrine's loop was located. "I know you haven't felt like you've belonged yet, from what Miss Avocet told me, but I promise you Miss Peregrine will make you feel at home."
Before Vanessa could even get a word out, they were caught off guard. An ambush to be precise. The hollows needed more peculiar eyes to devour in order to become wights and what better way to get more than from two ymbrynes and a lost peculiar. But it wasn't until the two Ymbrynes shapeshifted into their bird form and flew off that Vanessa realized she was truly and utterly alone. A Ymbryne's duty is to protect their kids from the very thing that just ambushed them, so why did the two Ymbrynes fly away? Was it because she didn't belong to their peculiar home that her life didn't matter? Ignoring how hurt she felt deep down, Vanessa took off running hoping to put some distance between her and the hollowgast that chased after her, and found herself at the pub. Her peculiarities were useless as her peculiarity to animate effigies was capable of animating shapes that represented motion, such as statues of people or animals. She didn't like being this defenseless especially with the people in the pub looking at her all weirdly. She assumed she was safe, considering the way the hollowgast just walked past her but she let out a shriek as something ripped her out of the pub from behind.

"Look I'm telling you, she knew exactly who we were!" Millard exclaimed. "We're not calling you a liar Millard," Emma said. "She knocked out Alexis and then this statue of some Ymbryne chased after Horace, she was trying to kill us!" Millard added. "That seems a bit far-fetched don't you think?" Emma asked. "Why would a peculiar want to kill other peculiars?" Alexis asked, crossing her arms. "Shouldn't we all be on the same side?" She added. "Miss Peregrine must've had you all doing some important research, maybe you guys found out something you weren't supposed to and that's why she attacked..?" Jake suggested. "What would some random peculiar want with information about peculiarities?" Millard asked. "She seemed fine using hers to try and slaughter us!"
"Millard, calm down," Emma responded. "You're going to wake up Kate, Addie, and Chloe," She added. "If this mysterious attacker attacked you three, does this mean she's in league with John?" Olive asked, causing everyone to look at her. "Sorry, it's a habit I picked up from Enoch when he and I used to eavesdrop on conversations back in the loop... anyways," Olive said. "Why would she be in league with Addie's kidnapper? She didn't kidnap anyone," Emma asked. "She only just tried to brutally maim us," Horace said. "If Hugh hadn't shown up when he did, none of us would be here," Millard stated. "Look, right now our best option is to wait for Miss Peregrine to return and discuss this matter with her," Emma told them.
