"I can't believe you."
"Doll, it's really not that big of a deal."
"What do you mean, Bucky? You cheated!"
"[Y/N], I think you're overreacting."
You were standing in the living room in the apartment you shared with Bucky. You begged that your eyes were deceiving you, but things had changed. On the television was the scoreboard after a round of Just Dance, and for the first time in the history of your relationship, Bucky placed in first. Admittedly, challenging a technologically inept super soldier at the video game put him at a disadvantage, but when you consider that he was faster, stronger, and overall better at just about everything else, you thought it was only fair. Until today.
You shook your head in disbelief, mouth agape: "How could you?"
"I asked Queens if he could teach me how to play, but I did it for you, [Y/N]!" Bucky then began walking towards you, arms outstretched to bring you into one of his classic hugs. You immediately pushed his arms away from you, stepping away from his embrace. Bucky chuckled slightly, uncertain if you were serious or not, "I wanted it to be fun for you, doll. I wanted to give you a bit of a challenge."
"This was, like, the one thing I could win against you, Buck," you whined, sitting down on the couch. The TV was still glowing with vibrant colours, the background music almost taunting you.
"Dollface," Bucky said, sitting down next to you, "Is it really that important that you beat me at a dancing game?"
If you were being honest, it wasn't really about that at all. Sure, you cherished your Just Dance tournaments with Bucky, but winning against him was more about feeling enough. Let's face it: Bucky was everything anyone could ask for. Not only was he good-looking enough to make the whole world stand still, but he was brilliant. Intelligent, loyal, confident: along with the kindest heart anyone could get to know, how could you compete? You were just a civilian who fell in love with an Avenger.
"Doll?" Bucky placed a hand on your thigh, his soothing voice broke through your thoughts, "Are you okay?"
You felt the corners of your eyes sting, tears threatening to fall. "Yeah," you lied. Your intrusive thoughts began to uproot every insecurity you had buried away. You stood up from the couch, Bucky's eyes following your sudden movement, "I, um, I'm going to take a shower."
Before Bucky could say anything you sped off into your bathroom, closing the door behind you. You tried to take deep breaths in hopes to control the incoming tears but to no avail. You turned on the water in the shower to wash away the sweat, hoping to drown out your sobs as well. The warmth of the water from the showerhead blended with your tears. Your mind was running wild, questioning every moment of your relationship with the handsome super soldier. Why did Bucky want to be with you? It didn't make sense when he could have his pick of any other girl of his choice.
After a while, you let out a sigh as you turned off the water. Stepping out onto the cool tile of the bathroom floor, you quickly grabbed your towel, drying yourself off. All you wanted to do was go to bed, and hopefully sleep away the intrusive thoughts of insecurity that crawled their way into your mind.
As you entered your shared bedroom, you found Bucky, sitting on the edge of the bed waiting for you patiently. "I was debating whether or not to join you in the shower," Bucky joked, but you could tell he was treading lightly. He offered a small smile but his overall expression was one of concern. His eyes scanned your face in hopes to get a read on you, an attempt to break into your thoughts.
A lump began to develop in your throat, so you quickly turned towards the wardrobe in search of something to sleep in. You instinctually search for one of Bucky's old t-shirts. "I'm really not in the mood, Buck," you muttered, your back to him.
You heard the floorboards creak as footsteps began behind you. As you pulled his shirt over your head, he placed his hands on your shoulders, massaging gently, "What's going on, doll? Was it something I said?"
You didn't want to be petty and keep these feelings hidden from him. You knew that Bucky struggled with that too. He wasn't one to open up about how he was feeling right away. It was only when he'd erupt in emotion would anyone really get to see what was going on in his head. You wanted him to know that he was safe to be honest with you. You did so by being honest with him.
You turned around to face Bucky. His beautiful, blue eyes were soft as they frantically searched your eyes for answers. You went to speak but you immediately shut your mouth again, the right words failing you each time. Bucky's hands slid down your arms and held your hands, a gentle, reassuring smile gracing his lips.
You sighed, your head falling sightly, "I... I don't feel like I'm enough for you, Bucky."
Bucky's grip on your hands got stronger, beckoning your eyes to meet his, "[Y/N], where did this come from?"
You let out a dry laugh despite the tears filling your eyes once again, "It's stupid... but you are incredible. And you could choose any girl, anyone who's just as brilliant, and clever... as good-looking as you are. And here you are with me."
"[Y/N]," Bucky spoke softly, yearning for you to understand, "you're the one I want. You're the girl I've always wanted." He led you to the bed, sitting down together before he continued, "You're it for me, dollface. You're bold, genuine, not to mention how absolutely gorgeous you are."
It was only when a smile began to form on your face that you noticed the trails left behind by fallen tears on your face. Bucky reached for a runaway tear before cupping your cheek. "I love you, doll. I never want you to think that way about yourself because you are the woman of my dreams."
"I love you too, Buck," you whispered, you smiling only growing more.
Bucky then leaned in, capturing your lips with his. It was almost as if the kiss was tearing away all the insecurities that were roaming in your mind away. Bucky soon broke the kiss, his pupils blown in awe and lust.
"Let me show you how much you mean to me, doll."
