"Am I ever?" The three of them laughed as Bryce went to his seat and Sydney walked onto the stage, helped by Tony. She stood in front of the podium and looked out over the crowd. Her eyes instinctively went to the table with her sister and friends. They all looked at her with smiles and silent encouragement. She took a soft breath and smiled. "Good evening everyone. I'm Sydney James, the head librarian at the Dolley Madison Public Library and on behalf of myself and my staff, we'd like to welcome you to our third annual fundraiser." She paused as people applauded. "I came to Dolley Madison four years ago, fresh out of college and ready to be the changes in the world that it needed. You know, a little naïve." There were a few laughs as Sydney raised her eyebrows. "But I believe that with your continued support and the support of the community as a whole, I as well as the rest of the staff, have taken great strides in being what everyone needs. The programs we've implemented in the last couple of years have helped everyone in the community. From our Storytime Saturdays to Tutoring Talk programs, Dolley Madison has become something more than just a place to check out books. We've become a family. For the last few weeks, we've had kids coming in from different elementary schools to draw a picture from a book they've either read on their own, their teachers have read in class or they've heard on Saturday mornings at the library. We put them on display this morning at the library as a part one to our fundraiser day. Salerno's, Crazy Cakes and Mitchel's all donated pastries while Alfonse's Deli donated lunch. They did it to support a place they love. They did it to support a community they love. They did it, because like the everyone here tonight, they donated to cause they love...family." There was more applause. "There are donation boxes located in the corners of the room if you're feeling extra generous. If you're feeling really ambitious, you can just pick up my bar tab." She smiled as the room laughed. "From the staff of Dolley Madison, we'd like to thank you all for your continued support and please, enjoy your evening."
Bryce shot to his feet, clapping for her as she walked off the stage, his heart filled with admiration and love for her. He watched as she made her way back to the table with Tony, smiling as she came closer. He and everyone else at the table still standing in support. She hugged everyone before she came to him and smiled. He took her hands and pulled her close, kissing her lips tenderly. "You were amazing up there. I'm so proud of you."
"Thanks baby," She said with a smile and kissed him again. She turned to the rest of the table. "So, who's buying the first round?"
Bryce laughed. "That would be me. I've already ordered two bottles of champagne for the table." He was about to help her into her seat when Andy slid up to the table.
"Great speech Syd." He gave her a quick hug. He looked at the rest of the table. "Hi everyone." He smiled and held out his hand at Bryce. "Nice to see you again."
Bryce smiled and shook his hand. "You too."
Andy looked at Audrey and sized up Nick before locking eyes with her.
"Sorry. Nick this is Andy," Audrey said. Andy shook Nick's hand.
"So, you both brought dates this year. Guess I'll only have to dance with Layla."
"Sorry to disappoint you Andy, because you know you'll miss me stepping on your feet," Audrey said as they laughed. Audrey looked around. "Where is Layla?"
"She went to the ladies' room. I just thought I'd come say hi really quick. Have no fear Book Patrol, I'll be back later." He winked at the table before going back to his.
Sydney laughed as she sat down. Bryce looked at her. "Book Patrol?"
Meredith laughed. "That's what he calls us when we get together. He's just weird that way."
Bryce shook his head. "I'll go get the champagne." He looked at the table. "Anyone want to come help me?" All of the men stood up and left together.
