THE AIR WAS SILENT AS THE BEAR MOTHER AND THE DARK QUEEN SAT OPPOSITE EACH OTHER. The mother, with a flushed face of disappointment and the Queen with one of guilt and defensiveness.

"Regina, there are other ways to settle a war." The mother spoke, softly, and carefully.

"She took my happiness." Regina snarled, although the snarl turned sour as she saw the look on her dear friend's face. "I don't have a choice."

"We always have a choice, love." Winnie reached for the woman's hand across the weathered wooden table. "You can find happiness elsewhere- and not in the destruction of another's."

Her words were true, Regina knew this, but she was too blinded by grief to agree.

"She's the reason the love of my life is dead- you can't possibly know what it feels like to lose someone you love that much, I have to do something- I have to make her pay." Regina snapped before retreating into herself with a new wave of guilt.

Winnie's eyes filled with a sorrowful shine, but still she smiled- kind and forgiving.

Regina wondered how she still had that ability after dealing with the evil Queen for so many years. To smile after a backhanded insult that was so deep cutting- she clearly wished to cry, but always chose not to.

Regina sighed, regret lacing her tone, "I'm sorry, Winnie."

"It's alright." Winnie's lips quivered just a bit- but never enough to wipe that light-bringing smile off her face. Winnie shook her head, "You're right. Your situation with Daniel was very much unique- and I couldn't possibly begin to understand the unspeakable pain of losing your greatest love to the hands of the one person who was meant to protect you."

Regina's reserve crumbled, but she didn't allow herself to cry- she was feeling far too guilty for that.

Winnie breathed a small laugh, plagued with tears that the woman was clearly trying to keep to herself. Her voice wavered with the emotion she was trying to hide, "Just ple—... Please don't pretend I haven't loved and lost too."

Her voice was pleading, as if begging Regina to show her mercy.

Regina was disgusted with herself. She'd heard that cry for mercy one too many times- but hardly ever did she hear it from Winnie.

"We're all entitled to a past, Regina." Winnie squeezed her hand. "Just don't let that past dictate your future."

Regina knew what her friend spoke was true. She knew that Winnie had been the victim of grief one too many times, and that she had never let that stop her from finding happiness as a mother, adopting four sons and accepting them as all that they were.
