(The lights come up all the way and the pastor walks in. The congregation is now in the sanctuary.)

FUDGE:    Is everybody alright?

VIRGINIA:    Do you see how shaken we are? Do you see that dead girl in the other room? Do you hear the dead lines on the telephones? I'd say just about none of us are okay.

FUDGE:    I mean relatively, Virginia. Considering all that is happening, is everybody in one piece?

ISAAC:    She's just....sprawled out like she wasn't even able to put up a fight—like she had welcomed death on account of she never even saw it coming dagum it. Someone took this life from her.

JON:        Maybe an angry ex-boyfriend. Know of any?

ISAAC:    I know you did not just say that to me.

JON:        Well you must not know very much then.

ISAAC:    Excuse me?

JON:        I said what I said.

JANNA:    Stop this now, guys. This is not the right time. Damn it. (She leads him away.)

JON:        Where do you two think you're going?

JANNA:    Don't worry about it.

(Lights on Janna and Isaac in the fourth grade classroom.)

JANNA:    I'm scared, Isaac.

ISAAC:    I know. Me too.

JANNA:    She...was...I just can't believe it.

ISAAC:    I know. Me too.

JANNA:    What's going to happen?

ISAAC:    I don't know. But I'm not staying in that fucking sanctuary where there's a murderer.

JANNA:    (Beat) So you don't think it was me?

ISAAC:    No of course not. I mean— I don't know. (Beat) Was it?

JANNA:    No of course not. Aileen and I did not get along, I won't pretend that isn't true. But I would never hurt her. I wouldn't hurt anybody.

(Jon is standing behind them.)

JON:        People don't always kill out of hatred. Sometimes it's out of love.

ISAAC:    Shut the fuck up, Jon. (He stands) You should leave right now.

JON:        I'm just saying. This chick is so in love with you, and she's had to watch you and Aileen be the worst couple known to man since the day she started coming here.

JANNA:    Aileen may not have been my favorite person but I didn't hate her. She hasn't accused me of any major crimes recently. Know anyone who may be mad at her for some accusations made against them?

JON:        I wouldn't kill her over saying I'm a thief.

JANNA:    Just like you wouldn't steal from the church.

JON:        I didn't.

ISAAC:    If I find out you laid a hand on her there will be another murder tonight. I promise you that.

JANNA:    Isaac, you don't mean that. It's not a good time to be saying things like that. You don't mean it.

ISAAC:    Okay. (He sits back down and looks at the floor) You're right.

JANNA:    Why don't you leave? We're just sitting here talking, we're not hurting anybody.

JON:        Well I reckon someone is hurting people. And until we figure out who it is, I don't want to be in there with them. I want to be in here where it's safe.
