JANNA: I only got to talk to her a couple times before....
ISAAC: ....she killed herself.
JANNA: Yeah.
(Silence.)
ISAAC: My dad had been yelling at both of us leading up to it. He's been wanting to retire but I think he's afraid to. Now, especially after this, he may die on the pulpit. He won't trust this church in anybody else's hands. Not with how important this place is to the town.
JANNA: Maybe you could take over.
ISAAC: I don't want to. I've spent my whole life here and that is not something I want to be saying when I'm an old man.
JANNA: Church in general or just this place?
(He does not answer.)
ISAAC: Maybe we should go check in before people get worried about us.
JANNA: Yeah.
(Beat. She leans in to kiss him, but he pulls away.)
JANNA: I'm sorry. Oh my gosh I'm so sorry Isaac I feel—
ISAAC: It's fine Janna I'm not upset with you I'm fine, I'm sorry. Just....not now.
JANNA: Now right now or now in a general sense?
ISAAC: I don't pretend to know the future.
JANNA: Could you see it? Could you see...us, I mean?
ISAAC: I can't think about that right now.
JANNA: Okay.
ISAAC: Okay.
JANNA: I'm sorry.
ISAAC: Don't be. You have no reason to be sorry. You haven't done anything wrong.
JANNA: I could have told you.
ISAAC: You don't have to say anything that you are not comfortable saying.
JANNA: Still.
ISAAC: Maybe it's best that you didn't. Aileen might not have taken it well, even with us being broken up the whole time you've known us. She wouldn't like knowing it.
(He stands and holds out a hand to help her up.)
ISAAC: Thank you for being my friend. You, Jon, and Aileen were all I had. Jon and I have only ever had Church in common, and Aileen slipped in and out due to her drinking. But this church can fulfill you just as much as it can drain you.
JANNA: I understand what you mean. Jon and Aileen have both—
ISAAC: Fuck. Janna. Oh wow I figured it out.
JANNA: Wait what?
ISAAC: I think I know exactly what happened.
