"do you want to read a book?" jack was over at ellie's apartment and looked up from his phone at this question, he raised one eyebrow and asked, "what book?"
ellie smiled and started telling him about the book, "it's a book i found last week at a book shop, it is called 'it ends with us'. and it's apparently very sad." the girl was very excited to read the story so jack agreed to read it with her.
she pulled them to her bed room and they laid down on her bed, jack with his back against her headboard and ellie's back on his chest. the girl carefully opened the book and slowly moved the pages.
"for my father, who tried his very best not to be his worst. and for my mother, who made sure we never saw him at his worst." ellie felt like the dedication was already sad enough to make her cry, so she quickly went to the next page.
"chapter one." she started reading the first sentence and jack got comfortable, trying to get ready for the next 4,5 hours.
the book was a rollercoaster of emotions. but the end was something they both didn't expect. when the last words of the book came out of ellie's mouth both her and jack had tears streaming down their faces.
"it stops here. with me and you. it ends with us."
"what the hell was that?" jack asked, but ellie had no clue. they let the tears fall on their faces and stared ahead of them at the wall.
"i feel so empty." ellie said after some time, jack agreed with her by nodding his head. and it was true, ellie felt so empty, it was like her heart had been broken and someone had stolen one of the pieces while the other ones slowly turned into her heart again.
after some time the two wiped their tears and decided to make some food for theirselves. they stood in the kitchen making their own lunch, it was quiet in the room until jack spoke up.
"i fully understand their decisions but i'm still so confused." ellie knew exactly what he meant but instead of saying something she nodded and handed him his food. he thanked her and they ate their food in silence.

jack and ellie had gone to jack's house after they finished their lunch. ellie had taken 'it ends with us' with her and when she saw josh she pushed the book in his hands. jack and josh both went upstairs to their rooms, jack to go on his pc and josh to go read the book ellie had handed him.
ellie helped mrs. manifold preparing diner, and as she did so the woman invited the girl to eat with them, which she gladly said yes to. when they finished making the food ellie called the two boys to come downstairs.
when josh entered the dining room his eyes were all puffy and red, "i finished the book." he said. both jack and ellie laughed at the younger boy who joined them at the table.
they talked about their lives as they ate the food ellie and mrs. manifold had made for them. and for some reason, ellie felt home again.
