Y/n's POV:

"I fucking hate this." I mumbled leaning my back against the bricked jewelry building pulling out the pack of cigarettes from my pocket, "You gotta stop smoking man." Elias, looked at the box then at me, "Yeah well I'll stop smoking when I'm done hating shit, okay let me live." I cupped my hand around the rolled nicotine and I lit it up scanning the people that walk by the both of us, "You know with me being your partner on literally everything that your dad has you go through, I think part of my job is keeping you alive without taking a couple years away." The black haired man flicks his finger flinging the cigarette out of my mouth and I watch it roll directly under some strangers foot putting it out. I looked back at him and he didn't regret his action and I silently thank him without him knowing, I know I shouldn't smoke but I was surrounded by it my whole life, well mafia life.

My dad smokes and every other person that I know that's with us. The mafia life isn't like some life you see when walking in the city especially after the second world war, tensions only raised, Elias is the only one I know that prevents me from smoking because his mom died from smoking and he doesn't let me keep a cig in my mouth for long unless he knows that I absolutely need it. "My dad's a dick okay, you know the man. He tells me what to do from training new comers to going on stupid city patrols like this. The man doesn't know what's best for me. All I want to do is leave this life style because frankly it isn't for me, I want a simple life. I want me and my future girl to be happy alone, in solitude only ever seeing others when we're in the city." I complain stuffing my hands in my pockets.

People think living a life in the Mafia is the stuff of romance and cute moments but no, people who think that are stupid because the Mafia is deathly stuff. It's running away when getting caught, killing innocent people, killing other people in gangs, it's torturing others and watching people suffer for what you did. It's being around death and consequences, and power that doesn't exist. It's a controlled life, where giving up everything is the only way to survive. I've dreamt of a life in the country, a house with large fields and a dog.

A place far away from death. A place far from every sin I've committed that maybe even the big man upstairs can forgive me but my mafia is considered a God, I'm considered a God. "Of course he puts you through everything, do I need to remind you that you're the hair to it all your great great great great granddad created, I mean you're next in line to control everything, the power, the crown, the name and hey if you really wanted to you can the title of 'king' instead of 'queen' and then maybe you won't hate it as much." Elias nudges me making me looking away from Joe's Diner across the street showcasing a couple sharing a milkshake with two straws. Maybe one day.

We walked where we needed to go making sure our rivals don't make an appearance, it's the biggest rule regarding other mafia's. Never step onto another's land unless required by the leaders. Everyone abides it even if you're not apart of the mafia itself, if broken then it can come down to death. Downstate New York can be a dangerous place. Elias spent most of our patrol trying to fix his suspenders until we were on the last section of the city, it was bustling with different vendors selling different things from ice cream to hubcaps for the brand new Hudson hornet car model.
