Y/N's POV
"Mom?"
Standing in front of me was a woman that might as well be a mirror reflecting my appearance in 30 years from now. Features down to the finest detail shared with mine. It's like I inherited every single gene from her and none from my father while I was in the womb. I was an exact copy of her.
"Y/n?"
Unaware to me at the time, the boys around me were staring in shock at the both of us. But maybe they weren't expecting the next few moments.
"Y/n sweetie, can you please let me into this house of yours?" My mother curls her fingers against the bars of the iron gate. "I'm in enemy territory right now. Being out like this is a danger zone."
I take a step back unconsciously.
"Y/n? Why are you shaking your head 'no' slowly like that?" Isagi comes to my side and holds onto my shoulders as if to bring me back to reality. "This is your mother out there!"
I don't snap out of the shock until I see Kunigami run to open the gate. "No!" I reach a hand out. "Don't."
"Y/n, are you insane?! Your mother –"
"I don't know this woman."
A period of eternal silence washes over all of us. I could feel the mixed emotions hanging in the air from everyone. Confusion being the strongest, but regret, panic, worry, and fear were present, too. What should I do? Whose side should I be on in this situation? Who do I save?
"You just called her your mom!" Igarashi shouts.
"Y/n, you're my daughter! You know this!" My mother yells, gripping onto the gate's iron bars with more force. "You can't stand there and lie when we have the same face and –"
"That's enough!" I yell. I walk up to her at the entrance of the gate, but she takes me by surprise when she gently cups my face with her hands. They're cold and frail with rough callouses that lightly scrape against the outer layer of my skin.
"I'm sorry." Her apology comes out as a whisper. "I didn't mean to hurt you or your father. I'll explain myself once you let me in –"
"No. You are explaining right here and now."
I see Igarashi shiver out of the corner of my eye.
"You don't wanna mess with someone like that," I hear Kuon whisper in the back.
"You know damn well what you did! You can't say that you didn't mean to hurt either of us when the weight of your actions still impacts both of us today!" I wince remembering that Dad is gone now. "Or at least... me."
My mother comes to the realization of what I said. "I'm sorry."
"You can't do anything to redeem yourself." My shoulders slump. "You can't turn the clock back so both of us, especially me, could have avoided the trauma that you caused. I know that you didn't even think twice about hurting us and leaving us the way you did. You abandoned us."
At this point, I have tears flowing down my face and my shoulders are shaking. My breathing is becoming more and more unhitched by the minute. I just feel so emotionally triggered seeing a face I tried years to forget, but had the nerve to show up when she needs me for survival.
"Letting you in and having you stay with us would be me doing a favor for you when you didn't do any for me or Dad. And... I would be a really good person if I did that. I might as well be called 'too kind for my own good.'"
