The rocky pathway was cold to the touch underneath y/n's bare feet as she ran home. The stars seemed to wink at her from above, knowing what she had been up to. The ecstasy from earlier still coursed through her veins - a feeling she didn't want to let go of.

The girl noticed the orange-pink tint against the dark sky far beyond the horizon. Soon Dawn would envelop the island in her golden rays. She'd have to be in her bedroom before then, if she didn't want her aunt asking unnecessary questions. How could she tell her anyway why she had been out all night?

If her aunt knew she had been with a man, she would, without doubt, get kicked out of the household. Especially if she knew that he wasn't from the island, but from across the seas. The fact that she was the closest her aunt had to a daughter (even though she wasn't treated like one) wouldn't even matter.

Y/n felt relief wash over her when she saw the first row of huts in the village emerging out of the dark. She kept to the edge of the village to avoid anyone spotting her. Lucky for her, her aunt and uncle's house wasn't in the centre of the village, and her bedroom window faced the tropical shrubbery. Quietly, she opened the window and climbed through just as the sun's morning rays touched the island.

The girl knew she wasn't going to get much sleep until her aunt barged in, but she was willing to sacrifice that to see him again. The tender love they had created together, like a delicate flame being ignited, was bound to flourish. That night, she'd meet up with him again, just like every other night, underneath the waterfall.

After all, they were now one.

Lovers.

Y/n stared out at the pale blue ocean. The sand was coarse and rough beneath her bare legs and in between her toes, yet she tolerated it. She was deep in thought, reminiscing over the past few months. All those memories would soon be all that she has left to treasure. It would be the only evidence of a beautiful love so forcefully suffocated by reality. Her heart felt heavy.

Tonight would be her last night together with her lover before he'd sail away, following the stars by night and the sun by day, back to his homeland.

As the girl traced random little patterns in the white sand, she thought back to that fateful night underneath the stars, when she disobeyed her culture's rules and gave all of herself to him. When they gave in to their desires and he made her his. Only the stars and the moon knew about their intimacy, but she'd never be able to face the people of her village again if they found out that she wasn't innocent anymore. Soon though, even her lover would become a distant memory, his name forever engraved within the depths of her heart. No one, except her, would even be aware that he existed.

Y/n briefly glanced back up to the calm ocean waves. They gently lapped over each other, sending their own delicate waves of salty ocean mist towards her. Behind the horizon, the afternoon sun was slowly lowering itself in the sky. It emitted a warm glow, and its rays were pleasant to the skin. If it were possible, y/n would have sailed away with the man she loved - to where sun and sea meet at dusk and dawn. But it wasn't that easy. She was forced to live underneath her aunt and uncle's roof until she'd find a suitable husband within the village. And besides, she couldn't just leave them without explanation, could she?
