It takes weeks for both of us to be discharged from the hospital.
Meera and I both look like we'd been through the wringer and yet I didn't want to rest. I went back to work with my head still bandaged. Meera took a week off, moving back to her apartment and spending time with Pharaoh.
I've only met that cat once and I don't get why everyone is scared of him. Even Felix refused to go near the grey-haired fluff ball — and Felix likes cats. Maybe I'm just biased or Pharaoh is like his owner, partial to Farewells. He likes to cuddle up with Nat when Meera is a work.
Speaking of work...I had a huge pile of paperwork to sort through under Anya's watchful eye.
"Please, tell me there isn't any more," I said to my assistant. "If I have to review another draft proposal, I'll jump off this building. I swear to god."
My assistant looked nervously towards Anya who was reviewing her paperwork. The moment I came into work this morning, she corralled me into my office and sat down in the chair opposite of me.
I can't blame her. Anya handled everything when I was in the hospital...and when I took those days off to spend with Meera...and when I went on impromptu lunch dates without telling her...and that time I went to get Nik out of jail again. The point that I'm trying to state is that this company along with its many employees, legal or otherwise, would be in complete and utter shit without her.
I don't think I could ever repay her for what she did. All I could think of was making sure that she took and nice long vacation around Europe and buy her some new flowers for her garden. That plan was fifty percent done, I'm just waiting for the final gift to arrive from London.
Anya sighs through her nose and takes off her gold-rimmed glasses. "Ivan, you know the rules," she said. "You be a good boy, finish your paperwork, and then you can go and see your wonderful girlfriend."
"How dare you use my girlfriend against me?" I picked up another stack of papers and started to flip through them, marking my opinions in red pen.
"Because your girlfriend is the only one who can make you behave other than me." She replied. "And I intend to use that to my full advantage."
I glanced over at her. "You and Meera teamed up against me, didn't you?"
She rolls her eyes. "I have no idea what you mean, brother dearest."
The day passed more slowly than I would've liked. Between paperwork, meetings, and running work-related errands I kept glancing at my private phone, waiting for a certain call.
It didn't ring until after five pm.
Anya was still in her office, talking on the phone with one of the clients. I hung around the doorframe, making sure that I was covering her gift.
She looked up at me briefly, mouthing 'why was I here?' I shrugged my shoulders which made the scowl on her face deepen.
Anya was in a mood especially when she was dealing with a difficult client. I didn't envy her job but I did still feel a little bad that people gave her shit because she was a woman. Anya is capable, it had nothing to do with her gender. She was more likely to punch someone in the mouth for being a sexist asshole, she didn't really need me to defend her but I wanted to anyway. Anya stepped up to bat for me several times and I was her younger brother, I'd be an idiot if I didn't have her back. This company depended on both of us after all, trust was needed.
