L.A. is still warm.
After spending two years in New York, it's hotter than warm. The breeze is gentle, brushing through my hair as it glides through the California hills. The sight is a familiar one but it no longer feels like home.
I'll always come back to this spot to reminisce. I see the city in the distance, the sun catching off the glass as it started to set, setting this building alight in hues of orange and red.
"You're brooding, aren't you?" Two strong arms wrapped around my waist, the familiar scent of cologne and smoke cocooning around me. I leaned back, feeling safe. "I can't blame you, that is one spectacular view, Sweetheart."
"Please," I turned around and kiss his cheek. "I'm not you."
Ivan grins. "I'm better at brooding than you and I look handsome while doing it."
"You just want me to call you handsome again don't you?"
"Well...I am, aren't I?" Ivan kisses my temple. "Your compliments look good on me."
"I spoil you."
"You know, I was talking to Roma the other day..."
I tilt my head. "It's a surprise you're still alive."
"Let me finish." He sends me a playful glare. "We were talking about you. You see, he interrogated me for an hour."
I laughed, holding his face in my hands. My thumb traced over his bottom lips which were still swollen from last night. "And what did you two discuss that made you this scared?" I asked. "I can tell him to behave next time he gives you a hard time."
Ivan turns his head and kisses my palm. "It's because he loves you, Sweetheart. That man started a war for you and your mother. He's the closest thing you have to a father. I have to be nice to him now...even if he threatens to shoot me every time he gets drunk."
"He doesn't mean it."
He rolls his eyes. "You say that but you've never had a gun pointed at your balls."
I laughed at the image. Uncle Roma had been intense towards some of my previous boyfriends. Of course, those relationships didn't last very long but that didn't matter to the old man. He just wanted me happy and safe.
"I think Uncle Roma is too stubborn to admit that he approves of you."
"Trust me, I found that out the hard way." Ivan sighed. "He kinda locked me in a room and interrogated me for three hours before he finally gave me his blessing. It's a miracle that I got out of there alive."
"Blessing?" I lifted my head, looking puzzled.
"Shit, I wasn't supposed to say that!" Ivan groaned. "Ah, damnit."
"He locked you in a room for three hours?" I asked incredulously.
Ivan narrowed his eyes. "Sweetheart, is that what you're really going to focus on?"
