I wake up warm in my bed with my husband Thomas asleep next to me. His soft snores relax me. I look over to the corner of the room to see the rabbits asleep on their bed. I feel Thomas shift next to me. I turn over to I am fully facing him. I brush his hair from his eyes and kiss his forehead gently.
I crawl out of bed and walk over the the rabbits. "Wake up sweeties. Do you want some breakfast?" I say stroking each of them. They all stretch and look at me. "Come on my darlings. Let's get you some fruit." I tell them. We all go downstairs and I do a bowl of water with blackberries in it.
They eat while I make breakfast for me and Thomas. Once I'm finished I put them on a tray and take it upstairs. I quietly pop my head into our room to see he isn't there. I set the tray on the bed. "Thomas?" I shout worried. "Give me a second darling!" He hear him yell in a weak voice. I walk to where I heard him. He's in the bathroom. It sound like he is throwing up. "Thomas are you alright? It sound like you are sick." I ask gently.
Suddenly, the door opens. His eyes are bright red and puffy. "Thomas Dear come sit down." I tell him and lead him to sit on our bed. "What's wrong?" I ask again. "Nothing..." he mutters. "Come on. We need to go to the store. We've not got much food in." He says. "Alright. But first let's eat breakfast." I say. He reaches out for come toast but his hands are shaking. I place my hand on his knee and rub it soothingly. His hand slowly stops shaking. We both finish eating and get dressed.
We head outside and get in the truck. Thomas said he would drive so I let him. As he drives I can see he is gripping the steering wheel so tight because his knuckles are white. I place and gentle hand on his which seems to make him relax.
Finally we reach the store and grab everything we need. I hold Thomas' hand as we walk back to the car. We are laughing about the times when Peter kept stealing vegetables from Thomas' garden. We get back into the car after loading the shopping in the trunk. We set off back home. I can see tears streaming down his face. "Thomas?" I ask worried.
Suddenly he pulls over on the bridge and jumps out of the car. "Thomas!" I yells and chase after him. He leans on the brick wall sobbing. I run to him and take him in my arms. "Thomas, my love, what's going on?" I ask him worried. He nuzzles into my neck and sobs. "Come on let's sit in the car." I suggests. "No! Please no! I can't!" He panics and backs away from me.
Then it hits me. Today is the day his parents died in a car crash. I suck in a small breath. "Thomas come here sweetie." I say softly. He doesn't move. I slowly walk to him. His breath is ragged and uneven. "Thomas darling take a deep breath for me." I beg. "In through your nose and out through the mouth." I coach him.
He starts calming down and just collapses into my arms. I lower us to the floor. "It's alright my love. I've got you. No one can hurt you." I soothe as we sit together on the floor cuddling until Thomas felt well enough to get into the car so we could go home.
When we did arrive home the rabbits could sense something was wrong so they came over and snuggled up to Thomas.
Even Peter did too.
