I lay in bed sound asleep but am suddenly awakened by the sound of music.
"Throws me back again. Hanging on a wire. I'm waiting for the change."
I roll over and notice that Alan isn't in bed. I sigh and sit up, putting on my slippers and night robe. I make my way down the stairs to the living room and stand in the doorway only to see Alan writing something while listening to that song. The song that brought us back together after we separated. The song that made him cry before the accident. The stupid accident.
"The best thing..."
"We got back together before, didn't we? With this?" He asks turning to me when he realises I'm there. "Thing song worked before, Yeah..." I answer rubbing my arms nervously.
"I don't want another mother. I don't want you acting like you're my sister. I want...I want..." He struggles with his words. "I want your lips, not your cheeks. D'you know what I'm saying? So I'm going to pin the lyrics on the fridge. I'm gonna look at them everyday, and I'm gonna learn them off by heart." He tells me.
"Hanging on the wire again."
"Come dance with me." I smile softly and reach my hand out to him. "Come on." I smile and grab his hand pulling him close to me.
"Said I'm waiting for the change. Oh I'm dancing with fire."
Suddenly Alan starts to sob. "Hey. Hey?" I soothe. "Why are you crying?" I ask him brushing his hair from his eyes. He continues to sob as I stroke his hair.
"You do something to me."
"What if I can't make you happy anymore?" He sobs.
"Somewhere deep inside."
"What if I can't come back?" He sniffs.
"Hoping to get closer to you."
"Well, I'll just take what you've got." I soothe him stroking his cheeks while wiping away his tears. "Today." I whisper kissing his head. "Tomorrow." I kiss his cheek. "I'll just take what I can see." I smile softly. He starts choking up even more and struggles to reply. "Ok." He chokes out.
I pull him into a tight hug and he buries his face into my neck. I wrap my arms around his shoulders and kiss his temple. "It's okay. It's okay." I soothe.
We are going to get through this. And I don't care how different Alan is now. I love him all the same.
