Hey everyone so this was my first ever story put on Wattpad. I have never had the chance to go back and edit anything so just in case anyone had doubts this story needs alot of work.  Maybe I'll decide in future to go back through it and actual finish it.

My head was ringing but mostly I just felt foolish. Letting a med drawer swing out to nail me was not my top favorite moments of starting a new job.

I had been here a week and managed to find myself here in this busy ER. Not the best way of introducing myself to my new co workers but I didn't have a say in the matter. Protocol was tossed around like it held meaning.

When the sexy Asian walked in it almost made up for the unfortunate situation I had found myself in.

"Dr Choi". He said introducing himself. "Shaylyn Louise Lancaster." He said pronouncing it back to me as he studied my information.

"Please just call me Shay." I answered feeling akward.

The way he pronounced it made It sound ridiculous. I mean no one likes to hear their name outloud, especially me.

"What seems to be the issue?" He answered finally dropping his files.

"Yeah the drawer decided today of all days to pick a fight. I lost." I added playing off the hurt as I held the bump on my head.

"Your from pharmacy?" he asked.

"Yup".. I responded..

"You just started recently? I haven't seen you around before." He stated.

"Yeah a few days now. I came here from Arizona."

He shot his light in my eyes as if that helped the issue and moved his finger from one side to the other.

"Nice way to start your week." He teased. "Well your vitals look good. Any headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath?"

"No." I shook back at him.

"Ahh,ahm actually thats why we are here. She was dizzy." My friend Janice jumped in to interrupt.

I shot a glance over towards her before rolling my eyes..

"That was only for seconds. See gone now." I attempted to look a sound mind playing off any discomfort that I was feeling. I hated people fussing over me. He gave me a look as if I was playing games. Suddenly he wasn't sure about trusting what I had to say.
He paused going over my file again as if reading it might catch me in some huge lie.  I took in a deep breath sighing out loud as I watched him shrink his sexy eyebrows together.  If sexy could kill those files would be on fire right about now.

"Look I just really want to go back to work."  Please Dr Choi I squeeled in my ten year old voice.

"Well you seem fine but a concussion is serious. Its crucial to keep an eye out for dizziness headaches for the first few hours. If any persists come back here so we can look you over."

"Yes sir. Promise."

Hope your day gets better Ms. Lancaster. He said with a smile and we were done.

"Aweee...he was cute." I squealed. Yes I was always considered a bit of a flirt but I wouldn't have said it if it weren't true.  Besides he was extremely gorgeous how could I not take advantage.

"Yeah lots of sexy men here at Chicago med." Janice answered.

We made it back to Pharmacy but the only thing on my mind was these new systems. The main reason I was promoted and sent here to Chicago was to train and educate on these new med systems. In Flagstaff, AZ it was my duty to provide education and training on said systems until things ran smoothly. I became lead several years prior and with my skills in problem solving and my mad experience in Pyxis narcotics they knew I would make for a great team. My chemo and IV experience being a plus.

I was running inventory and discrepancies and noticed the Potassium was needed to be refilled stat. When I went up I noticed that the Etomidate had been replaced with that Potassium. This could lead to a dangerous situation if not corrected.  At the very least investigated so that it did not reoccur. Last pull was by a Dr Marcel.  I headed to room 304 to search the patients room hoping to find the IV in question and found Dr Marcel attending to the patient with the silver bag.

I rushed in and tore the IV from him catching it in nick off time. I panicked as I turned to look at which med it was.

"Excuse me who the hell are you." The Doctor was eager which pulled me from my focus. "You cant just barge in here."

Potassium that what this is. Your looking for Etomidate am I right? I asked as I stared back into his deep chocolate brown eyes.  His expression softened a little as I explained myself.  "Yeah." His answer was short but the look on his face reminded me to explain myself.

"Can we talk out here please." I pulled him aside. "Someone misplaced the meds. They look alike I assuming thats how this happened."

"I normally check." He said shaking in disbelief. "I just assumed."

"Believe it or not this does happen."

"I've never seen that before. To tell you the truth I've never heard of such a thing."

"A few months back an IV tech pushed in .3ml of zinc sulfate into a IV that had been overlooked by the tech and the pharmacist. Not only did they not catch the mistake but it was given by the doctor and the nurse who overlooked it as well. Sadly the 2 week old died. It was all over the news. Huge law suit that cost the hospital millions. Even though this happened several states over it is our duty to follow these mistakes in hopes of learning from them."

"Here thats the correct med. I'll handle this." I said waving the bag in my hand. "Again I apologize."

"I'm sorry who are you?" He asked again.

The look on his face was something out of a comedy club when someone forgets the punchline. He looked puzzled but at the same time desperate that maybe someone had played a prank on him.

"Im Shay from pharmacy. I'm new just in case your thinking that you don't recognize me."

"Actually funny thing is your people are almost non existent. If they do come up here there not here for very long. In and out so its just surprising to see you so engaged. Look Shay isn't there a way to avoid these things from happening?

"We do our best to put things were they go now of course we make mistakes but it doesn't stop there. A nurse for instance gets busy misplacing the meds she just picked up and placing them in a wrong pocket. People get rushed it happens. Also meds sometimes come packaged looking similar to other meds."

I hate to ask but this kind of thing happens alot, maybe more than it should? He seemed concerned.

"I plan on having a meeting later to discuss some ways to avoid these things but really its all we can do. It doesn't hurt for everyone to always double check what they intend to use. That's were you come in. Always double check. I'm sure you would have done so hadnt I rushed in."

The last part was meant to make him feel better of what could have happened. Still we needed extra precautions and I intend on using all my expertise to press the issue.

After making my way back to the pharmacy I went straight away to discuss the issue with my team lead.

The meeting was a success. I offered an idea that I remembered other pharmacies using back in AZ. Using neon stickers to highlight the similar look alike meds. This took more time in placing and printing labels but it was worth it if safety was an issue.

My supervisor loved the ideas I had and it was official that I would take over as lead and to come up with more ideas that would help in similar situations.
