A Wolf's Soul

Chapter 18

The four of them began to laugh. It felt so abstract. Almost...too easy.

"You might of caught me", said Titus slyly, who was sitting in the back of a van, "But the timer has started. In fifteen seconds it will go off and everything will go to plan."

Luna threw one glance to the others. They ran. As they reached the control pad, they could read 11s on a screen.

"What do we do?"

"I don't know!"

"Cut the red wire!"

"What red wire?"

"That red wire!"

Alice fumbled with some nearby scissors and cut the wire.

"It's not helping!"

Panic was overtaking them.

The room exploded. Jasper was knocked unconscious by the whole thing. Alice got her foot caught in a box and tripped. She yelled in pain as she twisted her ankle. Timothy wasn't to be seen. Luna was on her own. She had to get everyone out of here. She quickly helped Alice up.

"Can you walk?"

"Yes, but not fast."

Luna picked up Jasper, who was heavy, and they tried to escape the building. It was slowly collapsing.

They just got out. And as they did, Jasper woke up.

"What happened?"

"Never mind", fretted Alice, "Where's Timothy?"

They quickly went back to the vans and Titus cursed under his breath.

Gwen hugged them all. "Oh, we thought you were dead! The timer was a self-destruction button, as it turned out, Titus pressed it as we arrested him. He hoped you wouldn't survive.

"Timothy!"

Alice ran to the boy, who was lying on the floor, groaning and his leg twisted in a funny way.

"He fell out of the window", explained Gwen, "He's got a broken leg but he's otherwise okay."

Luna wiped the sweat off her forehead.
Gwen went to see the other Soul-Transformers. Alice quietly talked to Timothy. Jasper awkwardly looked at Luna. Luna hugged him tightly.

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For everything. For just being there for me."

Jasper didn't say anything.
Luna wanted to tease him, but the words hot lost in her mouth and came out as "I love you."

"I...I love you too Luna."

"Well", began Luna

"We saved the world", said Jasper

"And ourselves", added Alice

"And nearly died", groaned Timothy.
Suddenly, they all smiled broadly. And then, something extraordinary happened: Luna felt as if a burden had been lifted from her soul. And then a wet animal's nose touched her hand. She looked down. A wolf. Her sidekick. She saw Timothy stroking a bright red fox and Alice with a grey wolf in her lap. Alice's wolf ears twitched happily. And Jasper...he looked proudly at the big, black dog next to him. "I'm not sneezing!"

They grinned, and grinned. They had only been hopers. And now they had their sidekick. They were happy. Luna petted the wolf's head. No matter what, she'd always have a wolf's soul.
