Luna opened her eyes. She sat up, wondering where she was. Then, she remembered. St.Lupa's. Alice's bed was empty. Luna pulled on her new school uniform, a black shirt with a blue-greyish jumper and a black skirt, before leaving the room. Jasper was waiting at the end of the corridor. "Hey, Lunette!"
"Luna. I told you to call me Luna."
"Whatever. Let's get breakfast."
Food was served in the kitchen, then you were allowed to eat it anywhere. "Not in the dorms though", said Jasper, "but some do it anyway. Well, I do." Luna refused to eat in the dorms, even though Jasper pleaded her all the way down to a classroom.
"Just-"
"No!"
"But-"
"Jasper, no!"
"Just this once?"
"Jaswinder!"
Jasper glared at her. "Fine. I'll leave you. You can hang out with your new cool friends."Luna's anger turned to curiosity. "Who?"
Jasper's eyes glinted furiously. "Alice Engle. Out of all people. She has no friends, you know. Everyone thinks she's weird."
"I thought no one likes you either.", Luna replied. Jasper opened his mouth to say something, but closed it again. Luna opened the door to the classroom, trying not to drop her breakfast, and stepped inside. She saw everyone crowded around Timothy, talking and giggling. Alice sat on a table, close to the window. Her legs swung to and fro. Luna sat next to her. Alice's ears swivelled around. "Hi, Luna"
She looked depressed.
Luna wanted to ask Alice what was the matter, but she couldn't seem to find the right words. She could almost feel Jasper's glare on him, she decided to ignore him."You're friends with Jaswinder?" Alice's sudden question made Luna jump. Alice continued: "I'm not so sure if that's good. Jaswinder has teased me one too many times."
"I should introduce you properly to him. He can be nice, if he wants to."
Alice widened her eyes in shock at these words. Jasper must of heard too, because he was shaking his head, alarmed. But Luna ignored the protest from both of them, and stubbornly dragged Alice over to Jasper. After a lot of pleading and promises, Jasper finally agreed, rather unwilling, not to tease Alice anymore. "You'll have get on with each other soon", Luna had pointed out, "you're my only friends."
Jasper turned away, muttering 'just wait' under his breath.
As the teacher walked into the classroom, Luna knew straight away she was strict.
"Sit down!", the teacher barked at some students.
She noticed Luna. "Oh. You're Lunette? I'm Mrs. Huntington. Your Latin teacher. I assume your classmates have already introduced themselves?"
Luna nodded, suddenly feeling shy.
Mrs. Huntington nodded curtly, then beginning with class.
Soon Luna's head was filled with Latin words. Tenere, ponere, nuntius, silentium, homo...It was an endless list of words."Lunette, can you translate Gladiatores iam pugnant, furor armorum iam ardet ?"
"Why should I?"
The words had escaped Luna's mouth before she could stop them. Jasper gave her thumbs up from the front row. The rest of the class grimaced, and Luna turned a bright red. Known Jasper half an hour, he was driving her mad. Known him a day, she was already acting like him. Mrs. Huntington gritted her teeth and told Luna and Jasper to leave the classroom.
Jasper didn't seem to mind, he clapped his hand on Luna's shoulder gleefully. Luna turned away, she knew she should walk away, or at least be angry. But she couldn't help laughing. And no matter what had happened before that day, that's when the friendship between Luna and Jasper really began.
