LANA
"Stop messing with the radio Sydney." I bickered.
"Come On Lana. Your music is putting me to sleep."
"They're ballads. I want to sing." I sighed.
"Well, I'm driving. Do you want us to crash?"
"You are fucking wide awake right now since you're obviously arguing with me."
"So, we still have another hour drive before we reach campus and I want to get there in one piece."
"God, I'm about to smack you with a shoe upside the head."
Sydney laughed, "You can't aim for shit. You're a cheerleader."
"What is that suppose to mean."
"As I said.. a CHEERLEADER!"
"Why are you always so grumpy. It's driving me nuts."
"It's just a radio Lana. Put some headphones on and listen on your phone. I'm trying to drive us to school in one piece. Why are you so stubborn?"
"Me...Stubborn? Look who's talking? You're way more stubborn than me."
"Why the fuck are you even my best friend?" Sydney scowled.
"I have no fucking idea either," I crossed my arms and slouched into the passenger seat.
Sydney and I have been best friends since they were 14 years old. We met freshmen year in high school. I was a cheer co-captain at the time and Ms. Popular. Sydney was more of a rebellious type of girl who ditched classes and hung out with the not so greatest influential group of people.
One day, the principal called me into the office to tutor a student and fortunately for me, Sydney was that student. Sydney's very smart, but refused to show it. She's athletic and a musician. This girl can sing like she was made for it.
Aside from being a Co-captain for cheer, I was also a straight A student, President of our class, and the leader of the Dance Club. I loved to dance. It was my outlet to all things that made me fall apart.
Two different social circles and our paths crossed. We always bickered and fought since we were in High School, but to our surprise we were a perfect fit as best friends. Behind the tough exterior of hers, Sydney's funny, caring, and kind. I was more of a bossy girl who liked things my way; be in control of almost every situation, but Sydney wouldn't allow it. We compliment each other and bring out the best and worst parts of our personality, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
People wondered why we became best friends. We were so different. I was very feminine; her more tomboyish. Looks meant nothing to us because on the outside you'd think that we were strangers, but together we were inseparable and we honestly had a lot of things in common.
"We are here? Wake up, babe?" We were so close that we even had terms of endearment names for each other that seem to not phase us.
"Argh, finally! I can't wait to get into our dorm." I said.
"You know we don't share dorms." Sydney reminded me.
"I know and I'm pissed at the school. We put a request, but they seem to fuck shit up like they fucked with my class schedule. Who the fuck wants to have a class at 6pm at night?"
"I don't know, maybe people who work part-time or full-time." Sydney said sarcastically. "You know everything isn't always about you, Lan."
"Whatever Syd. Let's just unload your jeep and head inside."
We walked side by side as if we own the place. Everyones eyes turned to us. I always hated when girls looked at Sydney. Little does she know I've had a crush on her since Junior year of High School. The topic never came up as if we would be anything more than best friends. Sometimes we do couple things. But, that's it. And she would hesitant and stop what she did as if nothing happened.
"Hey Sydney," Rylie flirted, "Want to hang out tonight?"
Rylie was one of Sydney's what you call a 'friends with benefits' least to say. They just fill in the void and it was just 'sex'. I despised her.
"Oh, hey Lana. Didn't see you standing there..." Rylie looked to me.
I rolled my eyes at her, "Hey." I annoyingly said back.
"So, about that hang out, Syd?"
'Oh, no she didn't,' I thought to myself. 'No one calls, Sydney, Syd, besides me.'
"Not, tonight, Hun. Some other time." Sydney replied back that brought a subjective smirk to me. "Also, Rylie. Please don't call me, Syd. Only my closest friends call me that. We aren't friends. Just fuck buddies."
"So, basically you're saying, Lana's the only one who can call you Syd." Rylie said irked.
"Yeah, basically..." Sydney replied back which made me so happy that I was jumping for joy inside and tried to hide my blushing face.
"Yeah, okay. Whatever. I'll ask Torian then." Rylie said bothered.
"Ew, you do Torian, too. Damn, now I gotta get checked." Sydney rolled her eyes and walked away then directed her attention to me. "Can you believe that, Lan. Torian? Ew..."
I wasn't paying much attention to what Sydney was saying and continued leading the way to our dorm floor. "Are you listening at all, Lana?" Sydney continued, "Lana!"
"What?!"
"What's your problem?" She bickered.
"Nothing. I just want to unpack." I walked away and found my dorm number on the 3rd floor of the building. "What's your dorm number?" I asked.
"310. Looks like you're just across the hall from me."
"Yep, that's me 307... Meet me in my room when you are done unpacking."
"Ok, See you in a bit."
We split up and walked into the assigned dorm rooms. I looked around at the empty white walls and the old looking furnitures. 'Home sweet home. At least for for the rest of the year' I thought. I dropped my bag and started unpacking.
"Fuck, I forgot bedsheets." I rushed out the door and across the hall to Sydney's room. When I walked in. I saw Sydney in a daze staring at her roommate. "Hey, babe, do you have any extra sheets? I forgot mine."
Sydney snapped out of her daze and looked in my direction. "Yeah, babe. It's in my bag. Go ahead and take it."
"Oh Shit, sorry to intrude. I didn't know your roommate is already here." I pretended not seeing her.
"Yeah, uhmm yeah, Lana this is Bea. Bea this is my best friend, Lana."
"Nice to meet you," Bea extended her hand.
"Nice to meet you, too." I reached out. "So yeah, about those sheets?"
"Yeah, they're in my bag. Go and grab one."
"So are you guys like together or something?" Bea asked.
"No." Sydney and I said at the same time. "We are best friends."
"Oh, okay... I just thought...."
"Nope, single as a pringle..." Sydney interrupted.
My back was turned away, but I felt a pang of pain rising in her veins with what Sydney said. I was sad, but I couldn't do anything about it. She was right, she was single. We were in fact just best friends. I couldn't do anything about it. "Thanks for the sheets, Syd. See you in a bit." I stormed off pissed, hurt, emotional. This was going to be a long year.
