[#13]
It's about time that Clove ends up in detention. She has always been stubborn when trying to prove her point especially to her teachers. Ms. Trinket must have enough that day.
She entered a room later that day. She sighed in relief as she saw that no one is around. 5 more minutes until detention. "It's only for an hour. You'll gonna be alright." she told herself. Just as she was enjoying her solitude, the door flung open. There enters the blonde whom she knows. Well, everyone at school knows. Her mood was immediately ruined knowing that she's about to share an hour with a troublemaker. He just sat behind her and she tries to ignore his presence by just looking at the window.
"Look who we got here." Mr. Abernathy waltzed into the room. "Oh, a new one." he said as he saw Clove. "Care to tell me what brought you here today, Ms. Kentwell?"
"A misunderstanding sir."she answered. Mr. Abernathy didn't bother to make her explain any further.
"I'm not surprised you're here today, Mr. Hadley." he said flatly and Cato was seemed amused. He can feel that he's tired of seeing him.
"Always been a pleasure to grace you with my presence sir." he said it in a way that would annoy him. Even Clove was annoyed at him.
"Okay, let's get this over with. I don't want to waste my time babysitting you kids." he gave them few pieces of paper. "Reflect on what you did today and write what you can do to correct such behavior."
"Again?"
"Yes, Mr. Hadley. Got any problem?"
"This won't change anything. It's just written on a paper. It's rubbish."
Mr. Abernathy wasn't having it. "Alright then. Since there's two of you. Why don't you write for each other? Write what he should do. Write what she should do. Write for each other's reflections. Figure out how you'll do that. Now that sounds interesting, right? I'll see you in an hour." and he's gone.
Clove didn't waste any time and started writing. It didn't took long for her to finish. Cato noticed it.
"You done already?"
"Yes." she answered indifferently.
"Tell me what did you write."
She faced him this time. "Simple. You should keep your mouth shut to avoid further trouble." she even showed him the paper. "I can help you with mine. You can write that I should just mind my own business. Now we're done."
It only made Cato chuckle. "You're underestimating me, aren't you? You don't think I know you?"
That caught her off guard. 'What does he mean by that?' she thought.
"I don't mean to sound weird." he said upon seeing her reaction. "We kinda knew each other since freshman year. We shared some classes so I guess it's something?" he sounded so unsure now.
But Clove nods at him, agreeing about what he just said. "So, what shall we do then?"
A smile formed on his face as an idea crossed his mind. "I think a proper introduction would do first." He moved to the desk beside her. "I'm Cato Hadley." he said as he extended his hand to her.
'I know who you are.' Clove wanted to blurt those words out, but he seemed civil towards her. "Clove Kentwell." she took his hand.
"Nice to meet you, Clove." it's weird how he felt at ease upon saying it. "So shall we do our task now?"
It may sound ridiculous but they took their detention seriously. They spent the time actually writing reflections for each other. They didn't know much about each other but their observations were enough.
Clove can see from the corner of her eye that Cato was busy writing and was really focused on it. She wondered what he could've written about her. Part of her says that maybe he's messing around and could've put some silly things. She managed to almost fill the front page when she heard footsteps coming. Their detention has come to an end.
"Playtime's over." Mr. Abernathy took their papers and started reading them. The room was silent and it's becoming awkward for all of them.
Mr. Abernathy looks at Cato in disbelief. Clove can't tell if it's a good or a bad thing. Did he wrote something horrible about her?
"I hope you'll learn something from this." he exchanged the papers and hand it to them. Then he gave them signal that it's time to go. Cato was quick to leave the room.
'He must've written something bad, that's why he ran away.' Clove thought. She doesn't want to bother reading it or it'll only make her upset, but something caught her eye. His handwriting looks familiar.
She went straight to her locker and started looking for something. She found a note and started comparing it. Her eyes widened.
[ There's always a note left at her desk during literature class. It wasn't just a random one but it's specifically for her. She asked around but no one knew who did it, until one day it suddenly stopped. She didn't bother knowing anymore but she kept the notes. ]
She smiled as she remembers the fond memories about the notes. Who would've thought it was Cato all along? She started reading what Cato had written from detention. What made her smile even more is that he wrote a line from her favorite book at the beginning.
"He really did knew me."
