Act 4 - Vast and Blue

As the sun started to creep up above the swaying trees, and the rays of warmth landed on Deerpaws pelt, before a bitter breeze swept the warmth away with ease, hissing at her as she shivered and her aching muscles tightened. Cold licked at Deerpaws face and crept under her fur, spreading across her body like a herd of tics. With gently chattering teeth she wrapped her thin tail around herself tightly, trying to preserve every bit of heat left in her exhausted body.

The snow had mostly melted from the sun, but there was still a thick layer of slush mixed with mud that made there walking very unpleasant.

She was padding just behind Hazeldusk as her two kits, Runningkit and Aspenkit were stumbling along, there tiny paws barely making any indent in the slushy, muddy snow. She quickly scooped up Runningkit as he tumbled over and faceplanted into the ground, and his small mews echoed through the forest.

"Momma! I wanna be carried too! It's freezing and I can't walk." It was Aspenkit, he was wailing while clawing at his mothers flank. Deerpaw chucked out loud as he stared at her with bright red eyes.

The memory of Mousepaw, Ratpaws moody brother flashed in her head, making her look over at Ratpaw with a pang of sympathy, she had never had any litter mates to play with, but she knew the brothers bond was unbreakable, no matter how cranky Mousepaw was, or how bossy Ratpaw tended to be.

"Ill carry you if you want! That is if your mothers ok with it?" Hazeldusk gave the she-cat a thankful nod and Deerpaw quickly swept up the kit by his scruff, and he scrambled wit his tiny paws and heaved his way onto her back and let out an exasperated sigh.

"Thanks Deerpaw!" He let out a high pitched mew, she chuckled and carried on walking along the CreekClan cats guiding them.

"Wow, your getting quite big Aspenkit!" She exclaimed, trying to excite the kit, he looked over at his mother. "When do you think he'll become an apprentice?" She wondered.

Hazeldusk flicked her tail with admiration at her two kits, "Not long now! I reckon they'll be made apprentices soon after we settle in our new territory." She mewed with delight.

She could see both kits eyes light up and in a few heartbeats. "I'm going to be the best apprentice ever, and I bet you I'll be a warrior quicker than you!" Him and his brother bantered on about becoming apprentices and how they would be the best warriors in the whole forest. She chuckled to herself, remembering when she first became an apprentice, and how excited she had been.

The cold breeze swooped her fur to one side as a thought went in her head, will I become a warrior when we get back? A rush of excitement brushed over her, but it seemed to melt away and instead left a tight knot of worry and fright that sat in her stomach uncomfortably.
