Act 5 - In Stories of Fading Light
It was pitch black when the cats were moving. Silkpaw's heart leapt with excitement. A few hours ago they had started to climb the mountains that bordered the territories, and she could just about smell the dewey smell of the forest on the other side, and if she concentrated hard enough, the smells of the camp, the cats inside and... Dawnpaw...
Silkpaw doubted the silver she-cat was even still an apprentice. As she hiked the stony cliffs and surfaces of the mountain, she mulled over what her name might be.
Dawnmist? Dawnheart? Dawnwing?
"Hey." Said a voice, bringing her out of her head. She looked to the side to see Deerpaw, already looking brighter than usual, bouncing alongside her. "We're almost home!" She purred, pressing closer to Silkpaw. "You're gonna see Dawnpaw again!"
"Yeah!" Silkpaw meowed, lifting her tail. But then a wave of guilt crashed into her, knocking down her spirits and tail. "But what about you?" She murmured. "We can't stay together."
"The clans can't force us to give up our friendship!" Deerpaw exclaimed, earning a few disgruntled stares from the tired CreekClan warriors. "Besides, we'll see each other at Gatherings, won't we?"
"But what if we're both in a border patrol fight?" Silkpaw asked, her voice becoming more desperate as she searched for a reason they could be friends without breaking the code.
"Then we have to fight. But even if we do, our friendship wouldn't be affected... right?!" It also sounded like Deerpaw was starting to panic about the predicament too.
"I don't know anymore." Silkpaw said, flicking her friend with her tail. "Let's go hunting. I bet I could catch a bird or two in these cliffs."
Deerpaw nodded, and the two set off, not without telling a cat first however, she didn't want to go missing again. Then she bounded away from the patrol, trying to keep quiet. Deerpaw was hot on her heels as she tracked up the stony slope, smelling the faint scent of mouse.
The almond brown apprentice waved her tail at Deerpaw to keep quiet and slipped seamlessly into a hunters crouch. She raised her tail to see if she was upwind, then crept closer upon realising she was. Her haunches rocked as she prepared to pounce on the unsuspecting mouse who was eating blades of grass.
With a single spring she brought the mouse down. Deerpaw stood from her crouch and purred in approval. "Well done!" She meowed. Silkpaw carried her catch over to her and dropped it. "Leafbare is just coming to a close, but still there won't be much prey to hunt."
