Rebecca calls back the next day as we are finishing making a French toast and bacon brunch. Felix dips the last of the bread into the egg mixture as I pull some bacon from the skillet for my dad and me. We like our bacon on the undercooked side of things. I leave a few more pieces in the skillet to harden up for Felix and our mom, if she decides to eat. Someday she won't reject the food I leave her. Someday the smell will lure her from her cave. Someday...

A foot of snow fell the night before. Dad rose early and is outside plowing off the driveway. I look forward to the afternoon when Jamie will bring her nieces and nephews and we will help them build snowmen and forts and go down the hill in a sled before tromping back to Jamie's house, where Mrs. Ashburn will have cookies, hot cocoa and a roaring fire waiting. The meal will be something gooey and fattening, and Mrs. Ashburn will make me my own dairy-free serving. After dinner, we will play board games or watch a movie, and I will sleep over, barely able to share Jamie's twin bed since we both started developing hips, but trying anyway.

"What's up, Rebecca?" I ask, tucking the cordless between my head and shoulder while I pull the crispy bacon from the frying pan.
"How does the 23rd sound?"

"Sounds great! What are you doing today?"

"My dad's taking us ice skating at Potter Park. What about you?"

"Oh, we have a tradition that Jamie brings over her nieces and nephew to go sledding since I have the best hill. Wokie likes to get into his little sweater and bark at them from the porch. Then we go to Jamie's for dinner and I usually sleep over."

"That sounds great! So I'll see you about 6ish on the 23rd? Mom said she'd make soup again."

"Sounds good, see you then!"
