I grabbed my hot coco from the table and went into the sitting room. It was nice to have the house to myself. My parents were out clubbing, once again.
I rubbed my cheek where my stepdad had punched me. It was still hurting and I decided to cover it with a big square plaster I managed to dig out of my box. I sighed as I turned on the TV, time to binge watch my favourite Netflix series, Stranger Things.
I pressed the play button to begin watching the show but as soon as I did the doorbell rang.
Who is knocking at twelve o clock in the night?
Slowly, I placed my mug on the table as the bell wouldn't stop ringing. Making my way to the door, I peeked through the peep hole and outside the door there was a boy. He seemed to be about the same age as me. His hair was slightly long and curly and his eyes were a beautiful grey that you could get lost inside of. I smiled a little and opened the door.
"Hello." , I said, with a smile.
He seemed surprised that I opened the door and looked up to look at me. I watched him stare at me freely, up and down, and then he replied, " Uhh..Hello."
He was shy, what a cutie. But I don't like boys like that I knew this would only be temporary and so there was no point in swooning at him, even though I wasn't.
"What do you need?", I asked him.
"Oh, It's just that... I saw you drive in here earlier, this house has been vacant for almost 2 years and I wanted to say welcome to the... neighbourhood. Its great here... kind of.", he rambled on nervously until I stopped him.
"Thanks."
He nodded, gave me a smile and left. Closing the door behind me I giggled slightly and rolled my eyes before running back to the couch and continuing my show with no interruptions.
*A week later*
I woke up to loud screams and sounds of impact. My eyes widened in horror as I realised my stepdad was beating my mum again. I ran out my room and zoomed down the stairs, and sure enough he was hitting her. He looked mad, like he'd kill her. I screamed at him, not knowing excatly what I was saying. He ignored me this time and pinched my mum on the stomach. I dashed to help her but I was blocked by policemen who arrived to the rescue. I was confused, dazed from just waking up and soon the whole house was coloured in flashing blue lights and policemen and women.
My dad was cuffed in seconds and was taken to the station. I stared at my mum who was wrapped in a heated towel. She was shaking so much and tears were streaming down her face. I felt bad for just standing there but I had to help her, do something so I went to gobsit next to her. There were to policemen talking to her and a paramedic sat with her, aiding her wounds. I got to my knees and placed my hand on her thighs. She turned to look at me and her mouth widened in shock. Quickly, she turned to the paramedic and he took a look at her.
"Sweetheart did you know you had a huge cut on your forehead.", she told me. I instinctively threw my hand to my forehead and I felt something sticky. I looked at my hands and there was blood on it. I shrieked at the sight of it but the paramedic cleaned me up and sticthed my head in two seconds.
I checked the time, 6:36AM.
"Baby, I didn't get to tell you this but you have school today."
" I can't go. I have to stay with you. I'll be worried sick.", I told her whilst the police officers got ready to leave.
"I'll be with her.", the paramedic said with a smile. I smiled at her and then at my mum. I sighed as I walked up the stairs.
I went straight to my wardrobe and opened it up. I searched for a shirt and trousers to wear. I found a black crop top and blue jeans. I quickly slipped them on and went downstairs. I decided that I wasn't going to have breakfast and so I sat in the garden for a while. I took a deep breath and smelt the fresh air, it had been a while since I felt like this. Happy and care-free. I didn't want to go to school at all, I didn't want to go somewhere that my friends weren't. A different school didn't sound like a good thing but I couldn't travel for a day just to get to school and then another back home.
Shit, then I'm stuck.
I groaned. A police officer approached me. He smiled sympathetically and took a seat next to me. I heard him yawn and the he turned to me.
"If you want to, we could take you in our car. It wouldn't be a problem. Plus... you get to show up to school with a sick ride for the first day.", his efforts to get me to take a ride with him were funny. He was a old man using slang, he even threw his hands in a DJ like way as if he was throwing beat or something.
I laughed and accepted the offer. It would be fun to go to school in a police car for the first day. I got up and headed inside. I passed the kitchen and went to the sitting room where I saw my mum talking to the paramedic. I ran inside and kissed my mother on the cheek and waves the lady goodbye before I headed out.
"Have a good day at school sweetie!"
I rolled my eyes and locked the door behind me. Outside I saw the police officer who had asked me on a ride waiting for me with an open door. Other officers stood around and I watched as some left. Entering the car, I put in my seat belt and the other door next to me opened.
"Your mum told me your going to St Hills school.", he informed me.
I shrugged as I, myself, didn't even know that.
"It's a good school, just that there's a lot of 'bad boys' there. I'd watch out for them.", he told me as he turned right. As soon as he did, a huge white building came into view. Outside it was a long, wide white gate that formed a barrier from the outside. In the middle of it was a tall gate that looked like you were about to enter a haunted building. The paint was scratched off in many different places making it discoloured and look like it'd been here for almost 100 hundred years. Behind the gates were a swarm of teenagers waiting to enter into their classes for the next 6 hours. In the centre of the whole area, was a huge stone block that had 'St Hills- home of the Escaped Eagles'.
"Wow!", I gasped as I took the sight of the school in. The officer chuckled while he parked the car in the already packed parking lot. I turned to look at him, he looked really happy. He had a dimple on the side of his left cheek, and he looked young for his age. I smiled it had been a long time since I had seen a genuine smile.
"What are you smiling at?", I asked him.
"Your reaction."
"Why?", I was confused at his answer a I pushed for another.
"Don't worry, now go. You'll be late.", he said in a serious tone. I turned my head slowly to look outside the window...
But what I saw had me shook.
Everyone was standing outside it, wondering about who was inside the police car. I panicked, not wanting to get out of the car. The officer nodded at me as I reluctantly opened the car.
Everybody was staring right at me, and at that moment I knew that it was my time to shine and I had to own it being the new girl. And so I did. I opened the car and stepped outside. I thanked the officer and he smiled at my change of attitude. I giggle to myself as I strided out of the parking lot. One person stopped me and I looked at them. It was a girl, she was the same age as me, I could tell. Her hair was tied up in a bun and it was blonde with brown highlights, I loved her hair. She gave me a smile and grabbed my hand, and within seconds we were inside the school building.
"Nice entrance.", she commented.
"Thanks.", I told her.
We walked together silently until we got to the top of the school building. I was out of breath when we reached the principals office. The girl bounced as she turned to me and she held out her hand firmly, "My name is Felicity, what's yours?"
"Juilie. Julie Sandy.", I replied shaking her hand once as if we were high class business people. Felicity opened the door to the main office and then knocked at the Principals office. A deep voice answered and she immediately opened the door. The office was bright, the window was wide open and the space around him was clean. His table was neatly organised, with piles of paper on one side and a pencil pot on the other. In the middle but put to an angle so he could see who he was talking to, was a computer. The walls were a nice plain white and the chairs were leather.
The old man looked up at us both and his mouth instantly grew into a wide grin as he saw who I was. It seemed that he knew what I looked like.
"Julie!", he shouted and stood up. He fixed his blazer that he was wearing at walked towards her. I turned to look at Felicity who was nowhere to be seen. I swore under my breath, she left me alone in here!
"Hello, Principal..."
"Amesh.", he answered with a nod as he took his seat again.
"Amesh.", I repeated.
