It's been 2 days since the incident with Rafe showing up at the boat shop. He has tried contacting me a few times since then but I have just left him on read or ignored his calls. I have had time to think things over and something just keeps telling me to give him another chance. I know there is no excusing what he did but is there a possibility that we could still be friends?
I am currently working a shift at The Wreck. It's 3:30 p.m. so the lunch rush has came and went and it's not quite time for dinner, making it pretty slow. So when his name pops up on my phone screen this time, I decide to answer it.
I tell my 1 table I will be right back and I go to the outside dining area and press the accept button on the call.
"Hello?" I say softly into the phone.
"H-hi." Rafe replies. I can hear the surprise in his voice, I'm sure he didn't think I would answer.
I stay silent waiting for him to continue.
"Liv, I'm sorry. I would really love to talk things over in person, if you'd consider it." He says hopefully.
I think for a moment. If he is going out of his way to try and make things right I should at least hear him out. "Okay." I simply say.
"Yeah?" He asks hesitantly, I can hear a slight smile in his voice.
"Sure, I'm working right now, but I could meet you later."
"O-Okay, meet me on the beach by the pier at 9."
"Okay." I agree and hang up the call.
I go back inside and finish the last half of my shift. I clock out at 8 and go to the Chateau to change out of my smelly work clothes. After changing I go outside and find JJ sitting in one of the hammocks. John B and Sarah are having a date night so he won't be back home for awhile.
"JJ... I'm going to talk to Rafe." I tell him, deciding to be honest.
He looks at me, surprised. "What? Why?"
"I can tell he is sorry for what he did and I want to at least hear him out."
"I really don't think that is a good idea. I mean he physically hurt you."
"JJ, I'm fine, really. I at least want to talk to him."
"Okay, well just be careful. And if anything happens, call me."
"I will." I start to walk away to meet Rafe but I stop and look at JJ to say one more thing. "Oh, and this stays between us." I hold out my pinky, making him pinky swear like when we were kids.
...
I arrive to the spot where I agreed to meet Rafe. It's still a little before 9 so I have a seat by myself in the sand while I wait for him. I look out at the water and watch the waves. The sky is a beautiful shade of pink with the setting sun.
A few minutes go by and I hear someone sit down next to me in the sand. I look over and am met with Rafe's blue eyes.
"Hi." He says with a shy smile.
"Hi." I reply quietly as I turn my gaze back to the ocean.
"I just want to start by saying how sorry I am." He pauses and looks at me. I meet his gaze again and wait for him to continue. "For one, I realize it was really shitty of me not to stick up for you to Topper..." I shake my head in agreeance. "...and I'm sorry for hurting you. I was high on coke, and I realize that's no excuse. That stuff just makes me get so angry and I don't even realize what I'm doing. I'm trying to get clean, I really am."
I see his eyes drift down and he notices the small bruise that is starting to fade on the back of my arm. He lightly touches it.
"God, I'm so sorry." He says as he begins to get emotional. He pulls me into his chest and wraps his arms around me. "I would never mean to hurt you, Liv."
I sit there, leaning against him, as I digest his words. I truly believe everything he has just said. His apology was sincere. I let my body melt into him and listen to his heart beat.
