Run for your life – Lainey

I waved Joe and Marie off then shut the door slowly. “If I were you Hurley, I’d be coming up with either a very good excuse or an extremely safe place to hide until I’ve calmed down.”

He gulped visibly but didn’t say a word. I continued, I was furious but my tone was calm and clear which meant I was really, really mad. “I get that you wanted a child, but do you not even care about how dangerous an unplanned pregnancy would have been – not for me but for the baby itself?”

This time I waited for an answer. “I realise that now. I’m sorry. I was selfish and I didn’t think about the consequences. It’s hard for me to admit but part of me just wanted to jump into it so I didn’t have an option but to deal with the thought of being a father – even though I really want to be a dad, I think there may be a part of me that doesn’t know how to handle the actual planning of it all and just wanted to jump right in.”

I ignored his mediocre explanation and walked to the kitchen to get a bottle of water. “Andy, what you did was so inexplicably dishonest. I never thought I’d get to a place where I wasn’t sure if I could trust you or not.

He hung his head. “I can understand how you’d have a problem with trusting me after something like this. I really was being purely selfish and just covered up lie after lie, hoping you wouldn’t notice. I took advantage of the fact that you already trusted me so much and it was so wrong of me.”

It had started getting dark. It had been a long and emotionally draining day and I started thinking about what I was going to do when our front doorbell rang again. I don’t think Joe and Marie had left anything behind? I wasn’t expecting anyone so I looked to Andy. “I’m not expecting anyone? Do you want to get that?”

He had the same puzzled expression on his face as I did. “I wasn’t either – let me go. I’m sure it’s just Joe collecting something he forgot.”

I waited in the kitchen and listened to who it could be. I was stunned when I heard a females voice at the door. “Andy, I’m so sorry for this but you have to help me!”

Andy must have been surprised to because he didn’t say anything for a while then asked. “What happened to you? Who did this?”

From those two sentences, I could tell there was something seriously wrong but I was still a little upset with Andy and would wait for him to come to me. I heard mumbling then Andy saying to the woman, “Come in. I’m going to get my girlfriend. She’s good with this sort of thing and she’ll probably know how to clean you up better than I would.”

A minute later, a visibly nervous Andy appeared in the kitchen. “Lainey, my ex-girlfriend is in some serious trouble. Her new boyfriend has been beating her up and she’s in pretty bad shape. She says he’s after her and she needs a place to lay low and since he doesn’t know where my new house is, he wouldn’t look here. She’s got some pretty bad gashes and some are quite – intense – do you think you could help me and would you mind helping figure this out. I know you’re probably going to get mad at me because of the depression she sent me into the last time she was a part of my life but I can’t just leave her to get beaten to near death.”

He was right. This was not the greatest of timing for someone this toxic to come into Andy’s life especially given the fact that I was mad enough to be considering moving out. But on some level I could understand not wanting someone to be hurt. “I’m not happy about this, but fine. Let me just finish my water and you go get me the first aid kit and a bowl. I’ll be out in a minute.”

Andy walked away and I heard him saying, “Tara, she’s on her way out now.”

I rolled my eyes. Joy of joys; another coincidence. I drained my water and walked out of the kitchen into the lounge area.

Not so much of a coincidence. Underneath a blonde cascade of hair, two disturbingly familiar sea blue eyes stared at me. I went wide-eyed both at the fact that it was her and at the extent to which she had been beaten. Karma WAS a bitch.

In front of me sat my step – sister, Tara.
